Raised V letters not cleaning up

Post by Mr.Chips »

VcarvePro 8.5. Mach3

I’m trying to make a raised letter sign using a 60deg V bit and a 1/8” flat end mill as a cleanup. My problem is that this combination of tools isn’t cleaning up between all the letters, but I could be doing something wrong.
And suggestions?
This eventually will be reversed and used as a mold to make a headstone for a family member.
Thanks
HH

I haven't looked at your file, but if the tool doesn't fit between the vectors, it won't cut that section. If the radius of the tool path is smaller than the cutter, it won't cut that either.
You might have to reduce your tool diameter to fit in all the spaces. Just a thought.

Thanks but the text is all cut with the V bit. If the Vbit did a clean up around the text it would correct the problem.
There should be a way but I don’t know how.

Please post the .crv file. That way we can open it and look at what you have done. The toolpath file will only work for someone who is running Mach 3 on their machine and then they have to use it to cut to see what is happening.

What does your preview show?

The CRV file looks OK.
One more post.... Can you post a picture of the actual cut piece and highlight the areas of concern?

Yea, that's normal using a v-bit to do clearance. You can try adjusting the step over on the v-bit to minimize it. In truth, the actual finished product shouldn't be very noticeable if at all... A little cleanup is to be expected. Give it a try....

OK I’ll see what it looks like.
But it seems I saw or dreamed I saw a way to use the V bit as a cleanup tool, but not just the entire picture.

Thanks

The other thing you can do is do a little kerning of the letters to allow enough space for the EM to clean up between the letters.

V10 has the facility to use multiple clearance tools in a v-carve toolpath. Perhaps that's what you saw or maybe rest machining in Aspire.

The 3m radial sanding disks Michael recommends in his projects do a great job of resolving those. The 3m disks run around $1 or so each and you use 3 at a time. So use your cnc bits to do most of the cleanup. I use them with a Dremel. Also, I purchased a set of detail sanders from Hobby Lobby to help with cleaning up some of the larger areas. These are the ones shaped like a square pencil and the sanding belt slips onto it and can be adjusted as needed.

We use a wire brush from Harbor Fright (Freight) to do hand cleaning between tight graphic elements.
