Material Suppliers

Post by Tony Mac »

Sourcing suitable materials for signmaking / woodworking / engraving etc. is often a major
problem for users. So if you have know where to purchase Wood, Plastic, Foam, Corian, HDU
etc. please add the web site details in this thread,

2 very good suppliers of High Density Foam / HDP / HDU are,

www.precisionboard.com

www.signfoam.com

Both companies will supply samples for you to run test cuts.

Precision board have a coating for foam (HDU or Polystyrene) called "FSC-88-WB" (the WB is
for water based as it does NOT eat away the polystyrene or HDU).

Hope this might be useful.

Tony

I wrote Great lakes MDF http://www.greatlakesmdf.com/
Hi
I live in Gladstone Michigan 49837 I’m part of a growing number of people that are V carving photos in wood, solid surface, etc. I believe your design MDF would be a great product for this purpose. I would like to know where in my area I could buy it. Would it be possible to get some samples 9x9 in. or 12x12 in. Black MDF is what I’m looking for. Veneering select white maple on your design black MDF would make for a fantastic V carve photo

Thanks for your interest in Spectratech Color MDF.
1. I would be glad to send you some samples. I would also enjoy seeing some of the things you produce out of the product.
Can you please provide the address where you would like the samples sent.
David Smith
Four 12x12 samples came 2 black 1 green 1 red. The two black samples will be veneered and photo Vcarved. The red and green I don’t know what I will try. I open for suggestions. I plan on cutting both sides to get the greatest number of cuts on these test pieces.
I measured the variation in thickness 1 piece. was .003 the rest were .002 or less.

Ok I just requested samples from both your links Tony. If I get anything I'll post some pics.

Hey Dan have you tried anything yet with your samples?
Take it easy.

Hi Jay
No I haven’t done anything with the samples. I hoping to get some select white maple veneer this week and start veneering the samples.

Anybody near the Houston, TX area. There is a place called, Professional Distribution Center - (281) 561-9982, that sells that Spectratech Color MDF. I spoke with them today and they currently only have Black @ $88 for a 4X8' 3/4" sheet. Said they will be getting other colors in the nexr few weeks. -AD

I've used Great Lakes colored mdf for my custom cabinets in the past. Most commercial sheet good suppliers should be able to get it for you if they do not have it in stock. Some may require a minimum purchase if they have to order it. It is not cheap like plain mdf.

Good luck

I requested samples, I got a box of 2"x2" pieces with some info and one slightly larger black piece, nothing I can run on the CNC. The stuff is expensive, I was quoted $90 for a 1/2" 49x97 sheet but with no local source so I can't get it yet.

I find the biggest problem with materials is finding places that sell small quantities/ sizes (offcuts) for us hobbyists, so if anyone know online such sizes/ quantities can be ordered please post here.

I sent an email to Great Lakes to see if they would send me some samples (to Canada). I thought it might be a long shot, but I havent even heard back from them either way, and that was well over a week ago.

So far I am not impressed, if this is any sort of indication as to their customer support and delivery times.

Even if they dont want to ship to Canada, at least they should let me know rather than ignore me.

I might try once more before I give them up.

Sorry Peter, I did not notice an email posted. It may take 1 long distance call to see if the have an 800 # and if they have email.
I did call and leave a message for Mr. Doug Reid to let me know the above info.
I will pass it on as soon as I get anything.

Hi Peter
Just got off the phone with Doug Reid. He is in the grieving process at the moment. He will be back in office next week.

He says your source in Calgary would be 1) McKillican Dist. contact Brad Mussig, and
2) GoodFellow or Commonwealth.
Hope this helps. McKillican has product in stock (I believe).
