Stacked/Layered Text with a V-Groove bit

Post by pixl8ed »

Thinking about trying to make a stacked/layered text sign (as in the Stacked Text with Dan tutorial, but using a v-groove bit and v-carve toolpaths.
The problem I can see is that when cutting the bottom layer, the top text is going to have to be bigger.
I can try calculating how much bigger, and offsetting the top text in the bottom layer, but I'm wondering if there might be an easier way?

I v-carved one stacked text sign with a v-bit. I re-carved it using 1/16" and 1/4" straight bits. The problem I have is in painting. It is MUCH harder painting the tops of a v-carved letter. The slightest slip and you get paint on the side of the letter, not the top flat. This overpaint is VERY noticeable. It's correctable if the base is painted, but a real pain if the base is to be left natural.

This is a situation where a cheap foam brush works better than a bristle brush. Give it a try.

If you are making a layered text carving with a V bit, just be sure that the start depth for both layers is 0. There may be some air cutting, but the overhang on the V bit won't cut into the upper text. You may have to offset or bold the lower text if the upper text flat depth is very deep.
Good judgement comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgement.

Foam brush work great in larger areas, but not in tight spaces.

How tight ?

I was needing some small brushes in a hurry for a job so went to a couple of local places that I knew sold kids painting & colouring supplies. Bought a pack of brushes for a couple of pounds & in it were a range of bristle & foam brushes, there were some very small foam brushes in it
Sorted out the ones I thought I might use & gave the rest to the Grand Kids

As a tip on painting small areas, try grabbing some foam sheets from the craft store that are like 2mm thick. Cut some small pieces and then glue them to a toothpick or wooden skewer. Then stamp away.
