What material and where to get it?

Post by LessPaul »

I'm in the planning stages of a wedding gift. This is a rough design of a photo frame my wife wants me to make. I am going to shorten and thicken the flourish ends of the cursive fonts before making. My question is what to make it from. I'm looking for affordable, paintable, and of sufficient strength to survive shipping sandwiched between two pieces of hardboard.

I'm leaning toward half inch MDF cuz that's what I have in the shop, but suspect there are better materials to consider. Overall size about 16x16.

I've only used MDF a little bit. My first thought is as a wedding gift some thing of a higher grade should be used.
I've no experience with this stuff but: http://precisionboard.com/products/high ... hane-pblt/ I understand it is good stuff.

Corian should work well. Find a scrap piece at a countertop installer. Some are available on Ebay.

I agree with Mike and Tom. Corian is a brand name [Dupont] there are several other sources of polymer plastic too; including LG-HiMax & Avanite available in translucent, solids, and marble. Dale
