Is their a scale tha tells you the bit and depth how wide

Post by Eddiem »

Strange ?

I am working on designing a few custom single line fonts unlike any i have found.

But i want to design them to have 2 or 3 versions that work at different cut depths and for different bit sizes.

One for the 90 bit that works good at .1 and then another version that works good at .2 deep at .2 it covers over part of a .1 when cut.

So if i am using a 90 V bit that is a half inch wide and go .1 and .2 deep how wide will each cut be so i can make a simulation of how it will look in photoshop as i design them so i know how each one will look so i can fix any overlapping areas that are not right for each one.

I plan on making a few different fonts in different styles that are not your normal basic fonts.

A 90 degree V bit is easy to figure.

It will cut twice as wide as the depth you go.

If you go .1 deep - it will cut .2 wide

It's easy for a 90 degree bit. The width is double the depth.

For other angles of bits, you need to use a bit of trigonometry.
Width=2*tan(1/2 the angle)/depth

I think it is the following:

Width=2*tan(1/2 the angle)*depth

The deeper you go the wider it gets and the smaller the v-bit half angle the narrower it gets. A 90 degree bit has a half angle of 45 degrees for which the tangent =1. In that case width=2*depth

A 60 degree vanity has width=2*.577*depth=1.154*depth

And a 45 degree vbit has width=2*.414*depth=.828*depth

Yes, you are correct! Made a mistake in writing the formula.

All I do when I want to know how wide a bit will cut is draw the profile of the bit, then a line across it offset from the bottom tip to the depth I want. Scissor the overhangs flush to the bit profile and then use the measuring tool to determine the answer. I keep a drawing with all the profiles of the v-bits I have already made just for that purpose.

What I do when making rendered simulations of 2D cuts is to toolpath the vectors and turn on the Solid option. That shows a solid blue outline where the bit can reach.

I then go into node edit and modify the vectors to follow the edge of that and move them in/out where required. Finally I export the vectors as a DXF and render them as objects in my graphics package.

Ok thanks everyone.

I will get working on this and see what i come up with for a new font or 2.
