Brass nameplate samples

Post by miopicman »

'Flying Scotsman' and 'Billy Elwood' were designed and hand coded and took about a day each to code. On the other hand, 'REBUILT' was designed on Vcarve Pro and took about 5min to code. The last image was produced by Vcarve and shown to the client prior to milling.

Nice work! But, out of curiosity, why are you hand coding some when you have VCarve Pro?

The hand coded ones were done before I acquired Vcarve Pro. Somehow I don't think I'll be hand coding any more.

It sure is.

The hand coding was a bit of a struggle  but it's amazing what you can do when you have limited resources but plenty of time.

Those are very nice.
I have been messing around with a few here. I have a couple of machine issue to sort out before I post any pictures of good ones.
There is some over cutting cause by backlash and an V carve step over which is too large.
I also have been experimenting with vibratory finishing.
The picture posted shows the defects.
I have a backlash issue to resolve.
I am curious what finishing did you do on them? What tool did you use?
Did you put a texture on the cuts or just a flat bottom.

Thanks
Dave

Hi. I did not put any special finishing on the parts and the cutter was simply a 1.5mm flat bottomed end mill. Apart from removing some burrs, that is all that was necessary.

I should be posting more stuff by now but my Kress router has had to go back to Germany for repair, so my milling at the moment has ceased. However, I've bought a air-coole spindle and inverter and am trying to get my head around programming the thing - has anybody had any experience of this?
