Vcarve / Engraving Toolpath depth

Post by jaymcd0626 »

Anyone know how to set the depth on a vcarve / engraving toolpath (V icon) in Varve Desktop? It doesn't seem to have the same options as depth setting with other toolpaths.

Best way to get this information is to look at the Help-Help Contents for the toolpath which explains how it works. Or, when you have the toolpath window open, click on the ? in the upper right corner for the same information.

A v-carve toolpath has no depth setting. The depth is controlled by the width of the 2 vectors that are required for the toolpath itself. The v-bit will plunge to a depth that will fill the space between the 2 vectors. For example fonts. Most fonts are made up of 2 parallel vectors. If you zoom in real close you can see them. As Fixit Mike has suggested, this has been discussed many times and the help files will probably explain it better than I can.

Have you started to look at the vectric tutorials? There is one that covers a lot of the different toolpath types including the vcarve/engraving toolpath

A useful bookmark on your web browser is to this VCarve Desktop help page. Scroll down a bit and each item on the display menus is clickable to go directly to its location in the help file.

While VCarve / Engraving has no specific toolpath depth is does have a depth limiter (flat depth). The help file shows visual representation of how the toolpath works with and without a flat depth.

Is the original poster maybe hinting at using bits with different angles (90 degrees vs 60 degrees) ? In theory - and with a pretty expensive set of custom v-bits - you could manipulate the depth in such a way.
