It may well be overkill for your purposes, Shark, but you could take a look on Youtube at Frank Howard's vertical table set up. He has a few vidoes showing in great detail how he first built it, then how he modified it after using it for a while.

Upper three images show end table setup with water-cooled spindle re-positioned to be able to reach out of end of table for carving board end. The third image shows amount of y axis travel.

And below image is test results.

Only thing I might add to that is another support to the upper end of the spindle, to add a little more rigidity and maybe a couple of gussets for vertical rigidity.

Otherwise - that looks sweet.

Yeah, this is just a rough setup which I wanted to check out the workability of. Then build on it after successful testing. In fact I have an upper support for vaccuum hose for long duration carvings. I had made two of them just have to see if hole placement is same if not I will just use the file, reposition the hole and cut a new support. Thank you for the suggestions!!!

Had a rough start on the vertical edge (note first left side hole joint) but once corrected the rest went well.

A proven vertical edge joinery successfully created! Will fine tune it when I have a drawer or box to make using edge joinery vertical clamping fixture.

Another approach, with the advantage of not having to cut a hole in your floor for long parts, and not having to fight gravity for every clamp up:

Hi Shark,
Interesting you are making the "Knapp joint" I have just started cutting them, I designed a box up 2020/21 but had some down time with the machine and only just got round to cutting again, I am making it a little different in that I have radius sides fitting into the radius front and back,

Ends_1.jpg
I made a plastic templet to try the fit and just had to make a small change and now it fits tight and square.
Templet.jpg
I made a pair of brackets that I can hold down on the bed then clamp the work to them.
Brackets.jpg
Can't show the whole box yet as not finished but it is looking good so far.

There was a time when I figured out how to remount my spindle to a horizontal position, and create a post processor to switch the Z coordinates with the Y coordinates to cut building frame joinery on the end of 2x4s/2x6s for a tiny house project. The client though wasn't interested once they realized none would show after the framing was covered. I'd still love to see a structure made with no nails or screws but rather joinery and some glue.

If I could have come up with a quick way to switch the spindle from horizontal to vertical and back I would never have bothered with vertical clamping for joinery.

Just head on out to Amish country. Or look for old barns in your area, ones that look like they might fall down and you will probably see all sorts of stuff.

Another place to look is Japanese temples, but that is a bit of a schlepp. On one of my trips over there I visited a Shinto temple that was about 800 years old in Fukishima. Unbelievable! No fasteners, no glue.

My set up takes about 5 minutes to switch back and forth. let me know if you'd like to see it. It can also be mounted at other angles, though it's not as useful at angles as an angled table is.

All the milling, mortise and tenons was done on my CNC router. Obviously the sanding and finishing was not :D
