First PhotoVCarve

Post by redwood »

Here is my first actual attempt at cutting the PhotoVCarve toolpath in Aspire. Thanks to everyone who have posted their work and settings to aid me with this. I was surprised in a good way with the result, since I really had now way how it would turn out, even with the preview.

Material is redwood
V60 bit at .05 depth and 60 in/min
density 80%

Redwood sure isn't what it used to be. I get by using it for signs, but I have to think that old growth redwood would carve so much better.

I don't have a lot of species to compare to redwood, but I do a lot of 3D models and it's not too bad. Really depends upon the board. Stay away from the yellow sapwood.

I still struggle with photo v carving.
I basically use the same settings, but your looks much better than what I can produce.
After i do the carve, I seal the wood, let it dry, then paint black, let that dry, then sand and finish.
What is your finishing process to bring out such a beautiful picture?

One thing that I did prior to processing in Vectric, was to convert that picture to gray scale. I can make this better with some more image manipulation prior to bringing in to Aspire. There were areas that were affected by sunlight on the left side. They were pretty much invisible in the carving.

All my finishing at this point was to use a honey maple gel stain. I am a huge believer in gel stains. On many signs that I make, I will sometimes use multiple colors.
