Looks great! I got involved in a mess of other projects and I plan to get back to the photo engraving soon. I did note your settings and technique. Lastly, your work area is not a mess... I call that comfort... lol. I'd be embarrassed to show pics of mine tho... lol.

To paraphrase an old adage, A cluttered shop is a sign of craftsmanship!
Your picture looks great. Makes me want to give that feature in V10 a try.

I have a chip on my shoulder....several more in my hair and lots more all over my shop floor.

On your process, when do you apply the sanding sealer? Before or after the carving.
I thought the 45 degree angle was the standard. I'll have to play with that and up it some to see the differences. I tried one yesterday of an old basic training picture I had that I wanted to do for my military keepsake box lid. When I viewed it, it looked ok with the constant nips making the picture. I Shellac it first and let dry, but when it carved, it was bare-butt smooth and I thought another scrap wood! However, I applied a light coat of blue spray paint and let that dry, then sanded it... it came out pretty darn good, I am surprised. It was a trial. So I'll keep at it!

I apply the sealer after carving.
I do that to prevent the paint from bleeding.
I have applied the sealer before carving in an attempt to prevent chip out, but it really didn't work well.

The last few days Im struggling again.
Nothing seems to work out and I'm making expensive firewood.

I still don't have an understanding of the % setting.
I can't seem to cut anything under 150% without tearout of the passes.
But at 150% the pictures look horrible. (in my opinion)
I need to get an understanding of the % calculation and how it relates to the stepover distance.

Send a picture of your project. I would love to compare our results.

Ok, here is my example I tried. First pic is the original. My basic training.
Second pic was the photovcarve after I sprayed it with blue paint and sanded. Of course my sanding got a little carried away, but it still turned out not too bad for a trial. The last pic is a close up... notice it is all smooth and no nubs. As I said, I am surprised it came out like it did.

My settings for this was:

Start depth: 0
max depth: .03
stepover: .1

45 deg V bit (brand new and very sharp)

Raster
line space: 20%
line angle: 45 deg

as I said before, Vcarve preview looked like it was going to be full of little nubs, but there isn't any that is too visible.

Oh! and I shellac'd the whole thing before I carved.

Very interesting.
Where do you set the step over?
It's my understanding that its automatic by adjusting the % slider, or entering a number.
I also don't understand how you end up with a smooth carve when you used a V bit.
When I see the cusps break / chip off, I consider it a failure.
Am I missing something here?

BTW
It looks good.
