Perhaps you need to carve a picture following the settings above using a picture as described with a high contrast or take one that you have already done.
Then instead of standing close to the picture, stand back 8 - 10 ft and look at the picture. I think you will see that the picture looks a lot better.
Just to show you, click on the picture above. On my monitor it is so large I have to zoom out to see all the picture but before you do, notice the picture. To me the picture does not have any detail and does not look good. Look at the eyes before you zoom out: they do not look like eyes up close, but as you zoom out the picture begins to look better all the time until at some point it looks great.
