Re: We’re coming to DENVER! Save the date & book your place!

Anyone care to post any other helpful hints for us 'first timers'? Pick your poison. I attended 2 years ago (and will come again to Denver). It was 2 days of packed information and demonstrations at high speed. There was no way to follow everything in detail with proper focus and at the end of the ...

Re: A Really Good "Trick"

Understanding some g-code essentials can help troubleshooting problems. Actually "writing" g-code does not make much sense nowadays except for educational purpose. I sell some specialty CAM software that creates g-code and I must admit every time I do a new project I have to go back and read up on t...

Re: Recommendations for small simple CNC machine

Machine is moving with new closed-loop steppers and Planet-CNC controller board. Not bad with up to 280 ipm in spite of power supply limitations. I am quite happy with that machine for about $1000 investment (plus the rather expensive steppers that I bought 6 years ago for another project). I still ...

Re: Cutting a flute or grove in the sidee of project

This kind of a groove....tool path with VcarvePro and, as mentioned using lead-in and lead-out and leaving a little wood at the 4 corners as to not have the lid flying when finished.

Re: Recommendations for small simple CNC machine

Shopbot has a cnc they call Handibot. Billed as a "pick up and go" machine. Pretty small footprint but might just be what you are looking for. https://www.shopbottools.com/products/handibot Steve, I am aware of the Handibot. Neat idea of a handheld CNC machine for some special jobs. But not really ...

Re: Clearing pass problem

As mentioned, this can only be assessed with a look the real file but what happens all the time is when you have a rather detailed model with small deep pits or holes, the roughing bit (if you do that at all) may not fit into these holes and skip them but the smaller finishing bit will. That may mak...

Re: Recommendations for small simple CNC machine

One thing you said has peeked my curiosity: I will remove the plumbing and add 2 fans to air cool the spindle from the outside. I have been air cooling the 2.2kW water spindle of my bigger machine for the last 7 years without problems. While I understand and appreciate why you wouldn't want to mess...

Re: Recommendations for small simple CNC machine

Glad you posted such a great unboxing review. Do you have a youtube channel? Yes but is a wild collection of various stuff, sometimes without title or descriptions that I use to show small things on a forum: https://www.youtube.com/user/slomove/videos?view=0&sort=dd&shelf_id=1 When I am done with t...

Re: Recommendations for small simple CNC machine

What about dust collection. Seems like that would be the noisiest issue. Good question! Unfortunately I do not have the space for that anyway and guess I have to go without. Since it will be operated outside I believe there are no serious health issues (as long as I am standing windward of the mach...

Re: Recommendations for small simple CNC machine

So...I did buy the Chinese 3040 4-axis machine with a real spindle and paid (IMO ridiculous) $816 with the knowledge of improvement needs. Took a bit of a risk believing the sellers dimensions (so that it may fit into the RV cargo bay). It arrived today (2-day free shipping from a close-by warehouse...

Re: Recommendations for small simple CNC machine

Thanks for the ideas! Shopbot Desktop would be nice but way too big and unfortunately way too expensive for such occasional use. OTOH the Snapmaker is a bit smallish. Scott, got to think about that stonecutting suggestion. So far I am leaning towards a cheap 3040 machine. Some on eBay with a little ...

Recommendations for small simple CNC machine

I have been using my home-made mid-size CNC router for 7 years now and I am still happy with it. Now retired, I am planning to go on 2-3 months trips with our motorhome and obviously I can not take a 600 pound machine with me, not to mention materials and other tools. But I really would like to be a...

Re: Lightweight Dolly

.... Where did you get the bamboo plywood? At a local lumber shop, Anderson Plywood in Culver City. But this dolly was made from some scrap pieces that I had left of a furniture project. I like that it is strong and cuts extremely well, although I use it rarely nowadays since it is about 2-3 times ...

Re: Lightweight Dolly

......I'm almost like Scott regarding needing fatter tires. ... Agree. But then it would not fold up as compact. So it is a compromise that works for paved surface, grass and hard dirt which is most of the required distances and good enough for my purpose. For sand and mud I will have to take the d...
