You'll be surprised at how uncomplicated this becomes after everything is connected and running.

Idea 2:
Clamp two pieces of wood together...that becomes the center line. (No glue.)
Clamp this assembly to the table.
Be sure to have the joint centered under the center of the letter.
Engrave the letter.
Remove the assembly from the table.
Done.
