Re: Hey Vectric ! Time for LATHE CAM !!!

Grummy, etal... I need to apologize. One for joining a thread that by my mistake was referring to full lathe machining ability when my application was added feature to 4th axis rotary mounted on small CNC platforms. The full machining packages are readily available, priced fairly with the features t...

Re: Hey Vectric ! Time for LATHE CAM !!!

Grummy... I will also be disengaging the stepper drive pulley at the headstock shaft. I am taking a different direction as far as lathe zero goes. I do not intend to keep that zero when in traditional spin mode, nor do I wish to do the calcs required to get all 3 or 4 axis with required speed/stepov...

Re: Hey Vectric ! Time for LATHE CAM !!!

Grummy... I agree wholeheartedly. My SideWinder project will have indexing ability for both 3D in the round and 4 sided machining, including the torque to hold a blank for that machining. Also the ability to spin up to a few hundred rpm with the stepper for a few operations and a variable speed moto...

Re: Hey Vectric ! Time for LATHE CAM !!!

Leo, Grummy, etal..... There is one other item to factor in. The rotary 4th axis, by whichever name the individual CNC mfgr. markets it, is probably the single most underutilized option that has been sold in the small CNC marketplace. There are a large number of them (sold units) that have not produ...

Re: flummoxed again

Another little trick to allow the "math" problems to not interfere with toolpath operations is to size the 1/4" bit at .248 or .249 in the tool database. They seldom cut at the advertised size and like Russell states, one or 2 thousandths will seldom affect a part cut in wood. Another advantage is t...

Re: How would you enter this into the database?

My experience has been different than some above. I own the Amana RC-2250 (1 1/2") and the RC-2257 (2 1/2") and they both work great, but the smaller with the 2+2 design tends to plug when planing some stringy woods. I received one of the Onsrud 1 1/4" surfacers with a bit kit on my first machine, b...

Re: Dado width issues

vgraves... This is a good lesson for all. Here are some of the high points: 1) A downspiral actually requires more force than an upcut, due to forcing chips into the kerf. 2) These cutting forces actually show up as a lateral force, perpendicular to the direction of cut. 3) Climb cuts result in smal...

Re: Right before Christmas and I need a part

SIBUD...
eBay has them listed by the dozens, if not hundreds. You will need to know the diameter of both bores, as they may not be the same.

Do an ebay search for "cnc coupling" If you cannot find one to match yours, I may have one that I can machine to your needs. PM here if you cant find one.

Mike... Use the "Job Setup" dialog to select the "north west" corner as the XY datum ( 0,0 ) X will behave normally, with positive values increasing to the right (east) Y will need a "gender" change swapping negative values for positive output. This will provide positive values to be output to the m...

Re: For you cribbage board makers - secret to clean holes??

Steve... I am with Don on this one. I also had the best luck with the "D" shaped 10mm shank boring machine bits. Doing cribbage boards I used the 3mm (.0118) and the 4mm (.157), depending on the pegs that were used. These bits are made for machine boring. They will require a 10mm collet in the spind...

Re: 2D - 2.5D - 3D

Richard... 2.5D is more of a marketing term than an actual defined CNC terminology. What it alludes to is that it (2.5D) is more than pure 2D, where 2 axis (X,Y) moves are accomplished with a fixed Z depth. V carving, beveled letters, ramped toolpaths and some other great features (and more) in VCPr...

Re: Having problems with tabs

I agree with Adrian. This is either a mechanical looseness issue or the toolpath(s) are much too aggressive for the machine's capabilities. The deflection is obvious, even on slowdown/retract at the beginning of the tabs, and even greater (longer) on the plunge after the tab. Can you post your .crv ...

Re: onion skin setting

Brian.... Can you state what your purpose is for wishing to use the onionskin method? Not that its not viable, as I have used it a lot, but it is usually used to compensate for either machine or bit deflection, or a low powered vacuum hold down. Since I know your machine, it would be my guess that y...
