Re: Work In Progress-Fishing Boat
Angie, I was hoping to be able to incorporate the lettering directly into the model, but it looks like you are correct, to get them to look any kind of good, they are going to need to be V-carved. I think they need to be there, because their perspective adds to the illusion of depth. As for doing a ...

Work In Progress-Fishing Boat
I am working on a harbor scene that includes lots of elements. The focus of the scene is a fishing boat, appears to be an oyster rig (the name of the drawing is "Oyster Bay"). The final carving will be about 36 X 24. I have not done a carving with this many elements of this size before so I am learn...

Re: Fun With VCarve
The wood is poplar, the bit was a CMT 60 degree that had just been resharpened. Feed rate was set at 150 IPM, however, doing this type of work, the machine rarely reaches that feed rate due to the constant accels/decels required by the change of directions.

Fun With VCarve
I do quite a bit of work with Aspire, but doing things with VCarve is just plain FUN! I had a call recently to create a plate with some Swiss style V-Carving. This is what I came up with: p1.jpg The design came from Wayne Barton's Chip Carving's Patterns. Wayne is a master of this form and lives in ...

Re: New to forum - need some guidance
Hello TReischl and dangre Thank you both for your advise. All of your arguments make perfict sense. I've decided to go with Mach3 on a Windows platform. Has anyone heard of Joe's Hybrid 4x4 CNC Router (http://www.joescnc.com/themachines-hybrid.php) To me, it looks like a prety solid machane with a ...

Re: New to forum - need some guidance
This is strictly my OPINION. I know zippity doo dah about EMC other than it runs on a version of Linux. That said, if your checkbook allows, I would highly recommend Mach3 for the following reasons: You will be dealing with one operating system across the board. If you want to install Windows apps o...

Simple Sailboat
Found a simple bitmap this morning, traced some vectors over it and then went to work modeling it. Here are the results: SailBoat.jpg This is part of a larger project I am working on. But once I had the model, I decided to try a bit of experimenting. One of the "problems" with carving is that the ca...

Re: New Machine-Test Project
Ok, so you want to see the machine, sheesh. There is a build log on the CNCZone at: http://www.cnczone.com/forums/diy-cnc_router_table_machines/127291-fairly_standard_8020_build_new.html It is a pretty typical 8020 machine. It uses rack and pinion drives, Gecko 540, and was pretty easy to build. htt...

Very nice work!
I personally enjoy seeing original modeling and ideas. It takes a lot of effort.

New Machine-Test Project
It has been a while since I posted to the forum. Been busy with all sorts of things, including building a new machine. For the past few days I have been tuning it up. Finally this morning it was time to actually give it a "real world" test run. So I dug out a model I had created in Aspire about 2 1/...

Re: Logging Train - 3D Relief Painting
That looks really good! Too many of us get hung up on this "wood grain" stuff. Most of the really great antique carvings were painted, let's face it, life is in technicolor, not shades of wood grain. Great work.

Re: Looking for experienced Aspire Users to help.
Look! The Emperor is Naked! :D I just love these clever marketing ploys. It had all the usual elements: We want to help. The offer of something for free. The limit (only 5 will be chosen) Another limit, you can't chose sale items if you win. I really enjoyed the response. WE MISUNDERSTOOD! Doesn't l...
