Re: Edge lit

Hi Martin. Took a bit of a CNC hiatus, no particular reason, but still looked and browsed posts occasionally. If one gets a couple 1,000 posts at a forum, then their heart has got to be in it. Anyhow my bases do the trick for me but there are no doubt better designs, have always shied away from devo...

Edge lit

Haven't made one in quite some time, was wondering if I had lost the touch. Made with .25 plexi, I prefer 3/8 but didn't have any on hand. Practical purposes the results are about the same, might get a tad more of an illusion of depth with the thicker stuff, but the main reason I like to use 3/8 is ...

Re: When?????

Hope they never do, the time, resources and $$ put into that project would more than likely jack the prices up across the board for everyone to please a very small minority of users. I'm sure if I was in your position I'd feel the same way but really, you have no grounds to complain - Twas windows b...

Re: Spring loaded engraver??

Yes must be similar, all I know is I tried it long ago and it worked, I tend not to question success. Some folks may feel a bit guilty or sneaky "cheating" but they have to understand, not only trial and error is required in CNC work but also improvising, the tools and software are our servants to b...

Re: Spring loaded engraver??

I typically use a profile toolpath, and select "Engrave (20' 0.02" Tip Dia)" for the bit. Don't know why a drag bit is not allowed but it really doesn't matter. That is for all lines, if there are areas to be filled then you use a pocket toolpath [or quick engrave], often I'll use both [profile and ...

Re: Spring loaded engraver??

Don't know what a scrimshaw is but everyone should have a drag bit, I use mine mainly for edge lit acrylic work but they can etch a variety of surfaces. Tips last forever, I never worried much about the amount of spring pressure and tend to adjust that in software [depth of cut] which obviously, is ...

Re: MJ leaf

Website says that is is 93% natural quartz, am guessing the rest is some kind of binding polymer which accounts for the nasty smell when machining

MJ leaf

Don't smoke myself but know alot of folks who do, and stylized leafs could be a nice seller. Found a hoard of samples of quartz material I guess it is and decided to try out the design of a leaf imposed against a wall background. Took a couple tries to get a decent result, I'm out of practice. This ...

Re: Any guess what process created this ?

Here is a little guitar I zapped, think I am going to epoxy fill the burns but I got to be careful, one at least overruns the edge so I have to make a little putty dam to stop it from flowing down the side. Not worried about this work changing the dynamics of the tone ect, cheap little travel guitar...

Re: Any guess what process created this ?

Those microwave transformers are deadly, would not even think of using one of those. Very sloppy, they put out over 250 ma and your first mistake will most likely be your last. Mine is professionally made, has safety features built in and puts out less than 30 ma, which granted still is dangerous an...

Re: diamond drag bit

Doubtful the plexi is inconsistent, more likely the bed and/or machine - Unless you have a specific reason to suspect it warped. Been out of the loop for awhile but have done alot of plexi in the past, seems to me 1% stepover is incredibly small and would take forever, but let someone chime in who i...
