Re: Alignment hole woes
with the corner jig AND the dowels, the location is over-determined.
If the center was not located exactly in the center of the exactly rectangular board, it will not fit.

Re: Plastic brad nails for clamping to spoilboard?
I have one of these Omer nail guns (>$400 IIRC) for Raptor Nails. It is usable for material up to 3/4" but would guess it is a bit brutal for 1/8" material. Actually I don't use it much for CNC work. Most of the time I prefer vacuum, tabs or screws. For thin material I tried sometimes the method usi...

Re: Converting a Dodecahedron to a sphere
Sure. Pain in the neck that Aspire can not save in older versions. But I still have VcarvePro10.514 and recreated the file.

Re: Converting a Dodecahedron to a sphere
Come on, Steve...why make it easy when you can do it the interesting way. Here is the correct calculation: The distance from the center of a facet to the edge is 35mm * tan (54 deg). That is 48.1733mm The radius is then 48.1733mm / Tan (31.7175 deg) = 77.9460mm I tried that in CAD and it seems to cr...

Re: Converting a Dodecahedron to a sphere
Given the dihedral angle of 116.56505 degrees (taper is 58.2825 deg), the distance from the center of each triangle is 40.4145 mm to the edge, that is 35mm * tan(30 deg), then, the radius of the sphere should be 65.2454 mm, that is 40.4145mm / tan (90-58.2825 deg). However, my trigonometry class was...

Re: How do I make a stepped miter toolpath?
If you just want a strong joint without seeing the innards, you can use fully hidden finger joints. Here an example with a box that I made a few months ago. Unfortunately no gadget, just designed in 2-D. So no real miter but a clean look from the outside. IMG_4899.JPG IMG_4900.JPG IMG_4941.JPG IMG_4...

Re: Worm gear for wooden clock
As mentioned, rotary would probably be easiest for the worm, although when making the "worm" a little bigger in diameter, you could cut a disc with an outside thread using a keyhole bit, e.g. 1/2" diameter with 3/16" flute and 1/4" shank. If using the threading tool path, you would need to experimen...

Re: Profile Cutting Bright Mild Steel Sheet
See video below for a test in mild steel that I did a few years ago on my homebuilt machine. Quality came out O.K. and I have since machined several steel parts when absolutely necessary. I hate it since it messes up the machine with steel chips and oily coolant and it throws sharp chips all over th...

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes
Keep in mind, you can carve your image as well into transparent material (like cast acrylic or PETG) and fill the carving with pigmented resin. It is not a true lithophane (since it needs a "negative" of the model) but looks very similar and can even be made in color with a kind of stained-glass eff...

Re: What is this showing
I had that on a file and Vectric acknowledged something to be fixed. I have not gone back to check if they did in newer versions. But it showed only, when turning a 2-sided preview with the mouse looking at the back of the active side and vanished when zooming in. So, for me it was not a big deal. J...

Just Some Old Floor Boards
Here is another one of my project stories with a bunch of pictures. My neighbor replaced his hardwood floor with new Acacia floor boards and had several left over, about 4.5" wide and 24" long. I decided to make a box from it with following challenges: - hidden finger joints and slanted side boards ...
