Re: Lady in the woods mystery miscut
Mike,
What version of VCP8 are you running?
Had a similar glitch that happened twice in 8.014, but since updating to latest it disappeared.
See in the pic, there was a small blue line where for some reason it cut instead of picking up?
Does your file show something like that?

Re: 2 sided machining bit question
If you use a spiral ramp setting with a profile inside toolpath for the holes, then any bit from 50-90% Diameter will work and you don't have to depend on the bit being nominal size. Also very easy to get exactly the fit you need by using an offset in the toolpath.

1 more Dan. http://www.precisebits.com/products/carbidebits/taperedcarve250b4f.asp I haven't used them as been playing with engraving bits on anything my .0625" Onsrud is too big for, but hear excellent things about them and Love their Fishtails for a good clean sidewall. Probably try their 32'nd th...

Sweet Scott!!
I'm like Wolffie, and can't even manage to stain cedar garage doors evenly!
Wonderful carvings...and someone's pretty good with a paintbrush!

Re: Font for very small lettering
Don't know for Oak, but 30,45,and 60's work well with Franklin Gothic Demi for a Truetype font from .125" up if "Bold" option is checked.
For 30 degree you'd best skip "Bold" in Oak I think.

Re: Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
CarveOne, Before I expanded my bits for freeform cutting Opal, I frequently used 1/8" Birch dowel in the Foredom and simply wet dowel and applied diamond/carborundum powder(120-40,000G) by pressing it into the wood, and same for my polishes. Never tried on metal, so rubbed a dowel on some 20 yr old ...

Double check your material set up as well if just starting to use the laptop to draw.
It will remember whether you drew from material top or bottom from the last file you drew and maybe laptop was still on the default?

Scott, I asked the same questions when I first started and got excellent responses. On #12 Bill Young gives the Dropbox link for his original design. http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/showthread.php?19057-Desktop-Jigging-Pics&highlight=desktop+jigging 1.5" spacing and his fences/jigs have dowel spaci...

Re: what's the cause of a blurry litho
Robin, Shopbot's a little different as your SB3 comes default in IPS (Inch Per Second) usually for MS (Move Speed). A fairly common standard shorthand for Feeds/Speeds is to say "1.2,.5,16K" for instance, That would mean 1.2 is IPS for X,Y Move speeds, .5 IPS for Z(plunge), and 16,000 RPM. That's th...

Robin, Just in case you hadn't seen it. http://www.shopbotblog.com/2008/03/a-ramping-the-vr-command-and-how-to-tune-your-tool-for-maximum-performance/ Especially check the section "my approach to VR settings" when Brady talks about MS for 3D as that's sort of what you're doing with PVC and you want ...

Re: Raised lines left on 3D carving. Am I missing steps?
I forget which forum it was, but a guy had a similar issue and it was giving him FITS until he realized that the lines only showed up when he was leaning on his spoilboard to check his cuts and spoilboard/material was deforming JUST enough to give him his mystery lines. Probably something else, but ...
