Re: Are these 2mm end mills good?

Not much experience with cheap asian bits, from what little I have seen some work surprisingly well but generally wear out quick, so in other words you might as well have bought a superior bit that lasts longer.

Re: tool settings for acrylic

I go with max feedspeeds, really no need not to. If you notice any flaws that you think may be corrected by slower speeds, you can always drop it. Lasers [can be] a viable option for etching plexi, but some do and some don't. I know UV lasers can do it and some co2's. I have a fiber laser and do stu...

Re: tool settings for acrylic

Try a drag bit if you are doing lots of small detailed work, then you don't have to worry about feeds and speeds

Re: Why such a huge gap between rough and finish?

Tough to tell any dimensions with a flat cut like that, looks about right to me. One thing that will throw off proper depths one way or the other is incorrect Z input.

Re: Why such a huge gap between rough and finish?

Purpose of a roughing pass is to hog out a majority of material to save wear & tear on finish bits, right ?
Why would you want less of a gap, to save time ?
Maybe I'm not understanding your question correctly.

Probably not a good idea to make a sale without knowing what you want to make it

Re: defaults in Job Setup

Well sure, if you open an existing file, naturally it will use the settings it was saved with, unless and until it is edited and saved. Thats why software programs ask if you'd like to save changes when closing, if no changes were made it has no reason to ask. If you start a new file, it will use se...

Re: Epoxy flooded SOA reaper

Ruth angel wow, you have a memory like a horse ! My preliminary thinking goes something like this, make a mold for s simple say 8x11" epoxy block Then perhaps make some random swirls of different colors in it, almost like an epoxy tie dye. Once set, machine a reaper model into it. I would hope it wo...

Re: Epoxy flooded SOA reaper

Yeah this one is a near twin to the other one I posted, cut from the same block in fact but the other one turned out nicer, this one I also had to fill in some glueup cracks with wood putty, all but invisible with the epoxy flood. I wonder how epoxy machines, I would guess pretty nicely, probably si...

Epoxy flooded SOA reaper

Been wanting to try this for a while, tried one a couple years back and the epoxy never hardened so I lost heart, I probably poured too deep or the mix was expired. Tried it again a couple weeks ago and it looked great at first glance, but in bright light or sunlight 1,000's of tiny bubbles were exp...

Re: Sons of Anarchy revisited

Glueup, 10x7 and about 1.5 thick - 1st thing I have made in quite a while, was wondering if I still had it in me. I didn't secure it properly and the bit ran away with the wood resulting in the little gash on bottom left, luckily it didn't affect the model itself. Then next try the bit bogged down a...

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

Looks pretty sharp, 1 other thing I'll point out is that not all 1/32 bits are created equally, I have had luck trying cheap made in china bits but the quality with them is spotty, a top of the line bit from precisebits/amana ect can make a noticeable difference with everything else being equal.

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

I've used 1/4" engraving bits had results not quite as good as the 1/8" engraving bits. My hunch is the ball tip will be able to carve a vertical line to a certain depth while an engraving bit is limited to the angle of the bit. I think that geometry may be more of an important factor than tip diam...

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

Wow, that's impressive! Now I'm convinced I've been wasting a lot of time and bits. It would take me at least 24 hours to carve an 8 X 10 with a 1/8" shank engraving bit. Any faster and the bit would break. The kicker is, it looks like you're getting much better results than me. This is the last on...
