I got the idea from a cartoon picture, so I got out the Zbrush and Rhino can came up with this model. The brim of the hat was from Aspires clipart. It is coated with metal bronze.

Re: Cryptex
Thanks yall it was fun to build. Michael, the parts were vacuum resin stabilized. I roughed them out first then stabilized and baked them. It keeps the thin maple rings from warping. Doesn't matter how long you've been on this forum, there's always something to learn. I do a lot of models from MDF,...

Re: Can't down load g code
You need to know what Post Processor your machine requires to run, and whether it runs in metric or imperial measurements. Under Save Toolpaths when you click the down arrow it will list the many choices. My machine runs in metric and requires the generic G Code, as shown in the picture. If it's a C...

Re: Advice Needed
Your laser should of come with it's own software to run the machine, not Mach 3. Usually you'll need to import either a Bitmap, dxf or ai file, etc., rather than toolpaths created with the Vectric software. You might want to google the K40 Laser and watch some of the videos.

Re: Importing logos and image files so they can be vectorised!!!
When you open a new file hold Ctrl and Shift when you hit enter. Then change the resolution to Maximum. That will help when you're trying to trace the bitmap.

Re: Problem with 3D cut job
My first thought is you might have a Tramming issue, your spindle/router tilted side to side or nod front to rear. Another issue is you may not be squaring the material to how the spindle/router is. In my spoil board, I took a engraving bit and made reference cuts a couple thousandths deep every 12"...

I guess a few of us had the same thought. Since my great granddaughter is coming over today for Mother's Day, I thought this would be a great present and also kept me busy the last couple of days.

This is a little different from what you have asked for but this post from a few years ago might contain some useful info   Martin, you reminded me of one I started a few years ago, but never finished. I found the picture of the eagle intarsia on the internet and started tracing the vecto...

Re: Intarsia
Thanks. Ya I found those too but they are for purchase. I don’t have aspire or illustrator. I’m just looking for a vcarve file to try it. I'm not sure about VCarve, but you will need to do some major node editing. I used Aspire. Once you get the vectors, you'll need to double them and delete the or...

Re: Intarsia
I've done about a dozen from Judy Gale Roberts ( https://intarsia.com ). They will mail a large print out that I took over to FedEx to have them scan it can save it as a pdf file. I was then able to bring it into Aspire and trace the vectors. Adobe Illustrator is another good software for the tracin...

Draw and Center a vector around your model, then copy to other side. When you position the model, use the "Center Object on Last Selected Object"

Draw a smaller rectangle in each corner, then mill inside that with the smaller bit.

Re: what went wrong
First thing that comes to mind is your mill slipped from the collet from either a wore out collet or it not fitting tight. and/or it had a bind somewhere and you lost some steps. I once used a 1/8" collet with a 3mm mill and had that problem.
