Thanks for pointing that out. It answers why some of my exports didn't do what I thought they should :)

The floral pattern on the maple box is from Michael Tyler's Spring Wreath project - Thanks Michael!

Carved Oval Boxes - How to Make Them

On a recent visit to a Viking museum I was enchanted with some carved Tine boxes so I decided to try and make some myself. Here are some I have recently completed and if you would like to make some I have enclosed in a compressed rar file a VCarve file with templates for 3 different sizes and a PDF ...

Re: Segments for Turning or Frames

Beautiful Bowl Ted!!!

An easy way to do stave segments is to use a bird mouth bit. I use the bit for 16 sided objects and it
is a breeze to cut the staves and glue up.

Neat design Michael. Would be useful for training hand/eye coordination! Would love to purchase the plans for it if you put it up on your website. :D

Outdoor sign for tree farm

This sign was fabricated from old-growth redwood which was salvaged from a water tank taken down at an orange juice factory. It measures 30" high X 44" wide X 2.5" thick. Carving took about 7 hours, painting took about 13 hours. Mountains were left natural.

Re: 3-Species Challenge

It sounds great! :D

Yes my technique does carve all dimensions so that only glueing the staves together is required. You are correct that the amount of curvature is limited to the thickness of the material. It is good for small projects but not for large ones.

Re: 3-Species Challenge

Tailmaker, Thanks for the explanation. It helps. What I was working on is a procedure entirely done in Aspire that allows for a particular shape and size dimensions to lead to a 3D shape for the stave that makes into a barrel without the need for steam bending. I have done preliminary carves that pr...

Re: 3-Species Challenge

Love what you came up with :D BTW - I recently searched for a formula for determining the curve/width of the stave in order to produce a barrel with wanted dimensions and shapes and came up empty. It seems that most barrel makers are using inherited patterns. I did come up with a procedure to come u...

Michael,

I know a lot of people use thinned Seal Coat instead of full strength out of the can- could you explain why?

Re: Butterflies on Walnut Vase

Thank you for the nice comments. I do the same as Ted, turn the inside on the lathe and rough shape the outside. My lathe and rotary use the same 1X8 tpi threaded connection so moving from one to the other is simple.
