Re: Masking issue

clean off the areas where you don't want the paint before it dries. Good advice for the OP, Mike, but when I've tried to do this the paint within the grooves gets dragged back onto the surface and texture also. Is there a trick to get the same effect as masking? There's a fine line between paint to...

Re: Union Stars not same size

I thought "Virtual Z" came out of cutting traces in printed circuit boards since there is a very small margin for change in Z.

Re: What is the best router?

Makita (Makita RT0701C 1-1/4 HP Compact Router). No doubt. You don't need the extra HP, because the machine limits will be reached before you do. (NOT dissing your machine choice! :D )

You'll probably change bearings in the DeWalt, but you will certainly change brushes more often.

That's my 2 cents.

Re: Moulding On Profile Edge

... you need to create a new rail vector by offsetting the perimeter vector inward by the width of the sweep. The moulding profile will go on the outside of this new vector. Use the perimeter vector to cut the part out, but not for the moulding. That explains a lot about my last moulding project. T...

Re: edge lit acrylic sign question

Use the rule to cut shallower the closer you are to the light. You can find some examples where someone put two rows of two different color LEDs in the bottom. Then the intentionally deeper cut "intercepted" more of the deeper placement color LEDs giving a two color sign.

Re: Saved notification

I would be happy with a FILE PATH indicator without having to go to FILE SAVE AS to find the path.

Most software has a FILE CHANGED indicator rather than a FILE SAVED indicator, but both would be nice! :D

Re: edge lit acrylic sign question

All you want on an edge-lit sign is an edge that extends "into" the plastic to catch the light. The plastic "can" be very thin and still show the same lit effect.

Wow! I don't understand using a cutting board as the base! Who, in their right mind, would cut into that piece? :D

Re: Brain Fade

Well, here in Texas we call it a Brain Fart! On a recent project, I went through all the motions of a tool change from Vcarving the letters to cutting the outline without actually changing bits. I put the bit in my hand back into the router and went on my weary way! :D

Re: Marble Game

That game would be called "Aggravation". A similar game in Texas is "Wahoo" and generally is cut from a square for four players. In addition there is a marble location in the middle for a "shortcut" play. Same game north of us would be called "Pegs and Jokers".

Lettering At One-Half The Thickness

I make a small lid for a box that I create by pocketing 3/4" board to t/2 (nominally 3/8") . Then I put some lettering on it with a 30° engraving bit. The lettering was developed with text, but converted to curves so I could edit a few nodes. Then I group the vectors, carve "on-the-line", with a sta...

Getting that cut out without breakage overshadows the use of the roundover bit. Amazing.
