Re: 4th axis question

Thanks for the information, Just out of curiosity, I have seen some machines that cut on one side and flip 4 times, I have seen other machines that rotate the piece very fast and cut like a lathe, and I have seen other that travel up and down the length of the part while rotating the piece back and ...

4th axis question

Hello I am making something somewhat similar to the seahorse corbel, problem is the material cups away from each other as its being carved due to the amount of material removed. Right now I can make them in hard maple only because it is the most stable. Will gluing two boards together first and then...

Re: Some Hive Equipment

That is very impressive I hope to learn how to make finger joints some day. Can you tell me where the bee hive model came from? that is neat. I made one of these for a friend of my a while back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1s28Oyxd-Q it allows you the bees to put honey in mason jars and when fin...

Re: Best stain ever

Im pretty sure I purchased it from vector art, the background is a texture on top of a shield, both came from the aspire native library

Can you which MLcampbel product you are using? they have a lot of different stuff.

Re: Best stain ever

I have about 5 cans of minwax stain, this stuff is a different beast entirely.

I believe it is made of hard maple, It was a piece that was laying on the floor. Glazing is something I would like to do but have not got to it yet.

Best stain ever

I though I would give a little advice since so much has been given to me. I picked up some BAC Sherwin Williams wiping stain at the junk store some months ago and have been more than pleased with the results. You simply brush on and wipe off or blot what you don't need. It dries within minutes and i...

Re: Help hainging carvings

Thanks for the info, I have a keyhole cutter I just never had used it for that purpose. I was just thinking could it also work to pinch and pick it up with some calipers if it is not to heavy to find the center?

Help hanging carvings

This is a dumb question but what is the best way to find the right place to drill a nail hole in the back of carving? On a more regular board I balance it on a piece of round stock, but something irregular like a slab takes 2-3 holes for me to find the center.

Re: Wood is cupping as it is being cut.

I think quarter sawn might fix the problem or at least help a lot. Most everyone in my area has small band saw mills so I don't know if I can get it. The maple I buy is already cut on all sides, everything else I have plained down at the mill on one side, Most of it sets for a week or two before I c...

Re: Wood is cupping as it is being cut.

That's an idea. How deep of a pocket do you think I need to make? The model is about .86 thick

I have tried to do two sided machining before and not had very much luck with it most of the problem I have is getting the depth right

Re: Wood is cupping as it is being cut.

Here is a picture of the problem, the large models that I cut are about 5.5 wide and .86 tall the wood is usually 6.5 inches by 1 inch thick. The smaller walnut models at 3.5 inches on a 5 inch or less board have very little warpage. I usually cut 4 at a time on a 36 inch board with clamps on the en...
