Re: Converting a Cube into a Sphere

Soapy, Here is a link to a formula to calculate the radius of a dodecahedron inside a sphere. https://math.stackexchange.com/questions/84263/how-can-i-determine-the-radius-of-a-dodecahedron This radius will give the correct curvature for the spherical surface of the Perspex. With your experience mak...

Re: Bulge Calculation

In geometry, the "bulge" is called a sagitta. Surveyors sometimes calculate the sagitta to use when staking out arcs. If you know the radius and chord length of the arc, here are two links with the formula to calculate the length of the sagitta. https://www.mathopenref.com/sagitta.html https://www.l...

Re: floor medallion

That will look fabulous in the floor.

We retired and downsized into a home that already had beautiful inlays set into the oak floor of four rooms. I enjoy them every day.

Re: Extruded Aluminum Deck

Dieboard Work Surface Deck.jpg For my CNC deck I used two layers of "dieboards" -- very flat, maple or birch plywood, around 48"x72"x3/4" or 5/8" thick, normally used in the die cutting industry. Since I am near Chicago I was able to pick up "closeout" stock at a manufacturer of dieboards at a low ...

Re: Avoiding Machine Gotchya's

Great post, Scott. Great advice. I could not agree more.

When I was starting, it took me a while to learn that what you describe is the best way to get great results on our machines.

Thanks

Re: Z point, proximity to material

If your controller is not set up for a wired puck sensor, you might use a Z axis dial setting zero gage. Not as easy, quick or smooth as a wired puck but very accurate and it works with fine tipped V-cutters.

Re: Time for a new machine; CAMaster vs Axiom Precision

Go with CAMaster and WinCNC. I agree with the reasons others have stated above.

I have had 5 cnc machines for different purposes over the years. WinCNC running a rigid machine with a spindle has been my favorite combination for the kind of work you describe.

Enjoy

Re: Double sided tape?.....

My local Ace hardware did not stock the tapes that Scott described.

So I tried 3M Outdoor Carpet Tape and 3M No Residue Duct Tape. They held the material very well and came off both the project material and the spoilboard with no residue.
