Re: SMoothing the edges of a jagged model
The model isn't flawed... it's just how Aspire represents 3d. There's an icon next to the resolution drop down that looks like a Rubik's cube...3d components are represented using voxels, or 3d pixels. No matter how much resolution you choose, there's always a stair stepped edge just like a bitmap. ...

Re: tractor seat
Interesting examples...
Here are 2 actual tractor seats that I scanned for posterity. One is a J.I. Case and the pitted basket one is an early McCormick.

Re: 3d with multiple roughing toolpath
Ted, I'd like to see your CNC roughing at 300-400 IPM. Care to post a video? Pics? Specs? Sounds pretty amazing for a home built machine running on a 20 year old controller. I would genuinely like to see it Z level Roughing a 3D part at those speeds. I've been feeding my family for 2 decades cutting...

...BUT IT TOOK ME ALMOST 4 HOURS TO DO.... It won't take that long next time... Nobody is born with the innate knowledge of how to do this stuff. It takes practice, practice, practice...No different than a musical instrument. Even people who have used software like this for decades, still practice,...

Thanks guys. He's totally excited after seeing the pics. Also really happy with the bar ends I did last night. He only really wanted the ones in the middle (that emulate the red ones) but I couldn't help giving him a few extra to play with...Everybody likes a little extra :D This piece of maple was ...

You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/H7KFWTEiNvg However...Rest machining is a kludge if you want professional results, especially on a large carving. Few realize that material moves while it is being cut. Combine that with changes in weather, machine hysteresis etc and you can get gouges a...

Re: Weird?...Yeah, we can do weird...
Dan,
Thanks for the kudos.
In the meantime, you can easily machine clamps similar to these in any material (including plastic or aluminum) right on your CNC.
Cut a long strip with the step in it (pocket or profile TP), then cut them to size on the chop saw. Drill as required.

A lot of 3D projects have come my way over the years. I probably post less than 0.5% of the things that I do...but I thought this project might be of interest to some. A couple months ago a customer contacted me because he was doing a custom-resto on a motorcycle and wanted to do some parts on the b...

IBILD 3D Scanning
I thought I'd post a recent project I did for the Battleship NJ Museum ( https://www.battleshipnewjersey.org/ ) I was commissioned to scan the ship's bell from BB16 from 1906, which you can read more about here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_New_Jersey_(BB-16) Originally someone was unsuccessful...

Re: 3D Project - Model Boundry
Here...mess around with this version. See if does what you want it to. A few notes: 1) Take care where the zero plane lives in the component stack. 2) Smaller pass depths on Z roughing TP will follow more closely to the model & give better results. 3) Don't forget to add 3D tabs to hold the part... ...
