Re: Why would we want to make dovetails
I am not wedded to the curvy joint but expansion should be no more an issue than in dovetails, i.e. both pieces will expand across their widths. The longer I have built furniture the less I am concerned with technique and the more I am concerned with design. The idea of showing off your hand skills...

Re: Why would we want to make dovetails
I still enjoy a handcut dovetail. But I make them so the tails are just a saw kerf apart so you KNOW they were made by hand (not possible on a machine). Its basically how a craftsman shows his skill - a cnc joint simply shows you know how to draw a curved vector. There are still many in the fine fur...

Re: Using the 4th axis as an indexer
Interesting. Thanks for this insight. I pretty much only use my 4th axis as an indexer. But I have just been editing the g-code to add in A-axis movements where I want them (save all the tool paths for each side as a separate g-code file, then copy and paste to save all the g-code in one file with A...

Nice! Interesting Leg Joint Style! How are they held in place? Glue, Tight Press Fit? Sharkcutup I glue it in place using epoxy. This lubricates it enough that I can slide the joint together, then clamp until the epoxy sets. Then LOTS of careful sanding. Furniture making is 20% cutting the parts an...

Re: Couple videos of furniture parts cut with Aspire
Always enjoy your videos RS. Curious if you've ever had any breaking at the top of the legs where the grain is short after cutting the joint? I know some woods like to split, and might be more prone to breaking than walnut. This joint is widely used in Maloof type furniture. That seemingly unsuppor...

Re: Couple videos of furniture parts cut with Aspire
Awesome! How did you program for the roundover bit? I know it's more then just choosing a bit. How do you choose the right height so just the roundover part cuts and you're not too deep? Looks like you got it down pat! Good job! It’s a 3/8” radius round over with a 1/2” depth of cut. You can do it ...

Couple videos of furniture parts cut with Aspire
Made a couple short videos of the stool parts being cut for the style of stool shown below. Thought it might interest some of you. It’s in real time, though repetitive cuts and tool changes have been edited out. https://youtu.be/hyKLhOEAj1Q?si=Lu2wPmD8DRRtK8N9 https://youtu.be/drEzv9VFEZc?si=Us_9ICC...

Re: inlay tool path
Resize your original vector slightly larger so it covers the incorrect pocket (if possible). Then recut the female pocket and the male inlay properly, so they fit exact.

Re: Need pointers for how to draw arch with Mortises
You can profile the inside of the mortise outlines and map them to a 3D surface. They will still have radiused corners to deal with, and stepped/arced bottoms. And if you model the shape using an arc the shape of the top of the part you'll know the height of the arc. Make your material size the sam...

Re: Need pointers for how to draw arch with Mortises
You'll have to cut the arch laying on its side, of course. Then to cut the mortises, flip the arch up and clamp it in place vertically. When you cut the pockets tool paths, you'll have to measure down and create a separate toolpath for each pair of mortises (one on each side of centre - I just take ...

Re: A Rotary 4th Axis disaster... I am very discouraged here
yes I am starting to see the light on your suggestion very clearly... A 4th axis is better for detailing work rather then cutting down a square... Agreed... Thx. Here is a short video of me turning square stock to round in a single pass. This is double speed, so the whole process actually took arou...

Re: A Rotary 4th Axis disaster... I am very discouraged here
It is possible to turn a 4th axis into a lathe of sorts by disconnecting it from the cnc control and connecting a speed controller to the stepper motor. Several years ago I did a power feed for the desktop mill by using a stepper motor and speed control. Does the stepper motor get really hot in thi...

You can also edit your post processor to move the spindle to any position you want when the file is finished. That is the method I use, also, I have Ger21's screenset for Mach 3 which has a Park button on it, really handy. The other thing I did to my post was to put a line in that moves the spindle...

Re: Bird Bath
Great idea! I have a hydraulic press that I use with forms I made to laminate wood strips into different shapes. Would be perfect for something like this (it has a 36" x 12" bed). Corian is rather expensive, so forming it would save hundreds of dollars over laminating it and cutting it out (a lot of...
