Re: weird thing happened

That was one of the reasons for some mystery issues. Now before pulling the thumb drive I shut down Aspire and use safely remove hardware. It has helped a lot. Trying to safely remove it before shutting down the program seemed to lock it up or take a long time.

Re: Wood

For random projects I've had some luck keeping an eye on Craigslist free section. People often give away solid wood furniture that can be re-used but is ugly for furniture. I recently just missed a solid cherry entertainment center that would have been nice. You can also sometimes find corian counte...

Re: Recommended Centurion Starter Tooling for first timer

I have had very good experiences with Centurion and agree with the bits suggested. Keep in mind the cut lengths when ordering. They have a tapered 1/8" ball nose that works good with deeper projects. With their 1/4" end mills there is only a $2 difference between a 3/4" and a 1 1/4" cut length. The ...

Re: Graphically Challenged and need some help, PLEASE

I have had reasonable results tracing an item like that on paper, scanning it then importing the scan and tracing it in Aspire. It will take some tweaking but might be a place to start. You do have to watch for changing scales and may have to adjust for them.

Re: Winchester model 12

Here is a stock I did for a BB gun. I traced then scanned thr original to get the profiles for the sweeps. Cut in 2 pcs then glued together. The thickness at one end isn't perfect but not bad enough to make another.

Re: Mach III losing 'z' zero position

I used to have that problem where the bit would plunge for the center of the earth and I had to keep one hand on the e-stop. I dedicated the computer to the cnc and removed all background and excess programs. No screen saver, no link to the internet or network to other computers. I haven't had the p...

Re: Z on surface question

I would leave z0 at the top but during set up zero on the machine bed, jog up the .25" and re-zero. That will work as long as the thickness doesn't vary a lot and you leave room for travel.

Re: Mistakes, I want to avoid the next time

For reasons I have yet to figure out my machine will randomly pick a new origin after running a toolpath. I can run the same tool path with no problem then it will go a few inches off in each direction. When I set the original origin I move the tool to a spot that won't be carved and mark the positi...

Re: First sign on my First CNC Router

I like the colt but I smoked the bearing with about 50 hrs on it which really isn't much. I kept it clean the whole time. A new bearing was about $15 and required pressing on and off. I've been entertaining the idea of a cheap spindle but am still gun shy on what to get.

Re: Anouther Mayan Calendar

It was very easy. Just spray it and let it cure then slop on a bunch of stain and wipe off the high parts. Here are some other ones using the same finish.

Re: Anouther Mayan Calendar

Here is my try cut in 3/4" MDF about 18" diameter. Krylon Bauhaus Gold base paint with cherrywood gel stain. I have learned that the base paint needs to cure for a day or it will pull up with the stain.
