Re: Alternative for end mill?

Thank you. My skim cut today was flawless. I agree that expensive dial indicators are not necessary. I had planned to use the z-shaped rod but found it too difficult to bend. I went with the simple wood piece, shown in several videos, with a small piece of 1/4" rod protruding from each end. It was a...

Re: Alternative for end mill?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I finished tramming my CNC router today. After watching several videos and making a wooden "trammer," I did see significant height differences from the spoilboard when rotating the trammer in my collet. After much trial and error using folded aluminum foil, I was able...

Re: Alternative for end mill?

I've learned that I need to do an initial .010" skim cut on my workpiece so that the wood is perfectly aligned with the router head. However, I still get some tool marks when making my final skim cut. Not sure whether this qualifies as "trammed."

Alternative for end mill?

Many of my projects are finished with an 11/16" end mill, used as a final skim cut to make my carvings stand out and be crisp. My router is limited to 1/4"-shaft bits. With help from members of this forum, I have learned to keep the stepover for my skim cut at 10% or less. This provides a very nice ...

Re: Touch plate issues

Well, I had hoped that the touch pad calibration would solve the problem. Not so. I have three choices in this calibrations: 1) plate thickness, which was verified as .375, 2) jog speed, which is very slow, and 3) calibrate z axis. When I run the calibration, the steps are the same as zeroing any bi...

Re: Touch plate issues

Well, I'm using the touch plate itself as well as any number of router bits. There seems to be no difference in results regardless of what bit is in the router.

Touch plate issues

I'm using the standard-size touch plate to zero the z axis on my CNC Shark SD120. Some of my carvings rely on a z-axis tolerance of +/- .005". Some of these carvings have been cut too deep, so I tested the accuracy of my touch plate, which measures .375" thick. After I zero the axis, I go back and r...

VCarve Desktop Trial Edition

I've used the trial edition to get familiar with the software. After purchasing my CNC Shark, I am now using the full VCarve Desktop edition. I would like to delete the trial edition from my PC but want to be sure that doing that won't delete some of the files I'm using for the full version. So, is ...

Re: Circular cut has me stumped

Reducing the feed rate for the Circular Recess to 60 IPM made a huge improvement. I'm attaching a picture that shows, well, lots of my test cuts for this recess. I've highlighted the one issue that remains: The cutter barely makes a mark on the ID of the recess as it is starting its cut. You ...

I could not post a .tap file so converted it to a .txt file. Thought I had posted this but will try again. :(
