Re: Aluminum Plaque finished
George, Thank you for your comments. I apologize for the late reply. I haven't been on the forum as often lately. I used a 1/4" 2 flute end mill at about 26-30 IPM and .125 depth of cut. Spindle speed was around 6500 RPM. This cutter wasn't TIN coated and tended to scream a bit at higher rpms. Incre...

Lithophane test in acrylic
So I decided to try a litho on our Fadal under flood coolant. I followed along with the tutorials and User Group instructions. Since I do not have a ball endmill I used the 1/4" 60 degree onsrud V bit that I have on hand. The finish pass rastered at 315 deg and cut perfect. The machined surface is a...

Re: Lithophane questions
Thanks Dale. I will certainly use that info.
i will use the v bit to do my first ones and get me a ball nose on order.
my first ones will be on a CNC mill with flood coolant so that should help.
Thanks again
Kelly

Lithophane questions
Good Morning. I am about to try my hand at a Lithophane. A far cry from the aluminum that I normally machine. I have a piece of Spartech Polycast 1/4" cast acrylic that will be my test material. I am open for any suggestions on machining a litho in acrylic. I followed along with the User group train...

Re: Aluminum Plaque finished
Thank you all for the comments. They are certainly appreciated. Kent, One of my next projects will be to make a lazy susan designed to look like the end of then A10 Gatlin gun. It will hold 7 shot glasses made from spent 30mm casings. Behind it will be a 12"-ish section of the barrel breach with a c...

Aluminum Plaque finished
I finished the plaque today. It is apprx. 12.5 tall and 15. Long. The aluminum is 1/2" thick and inlaid .200 into a piece of Walnut. As a metal worker by trade and not much of a woodworker, it is nice to mix it up a bit. I love the look of the brushed/satin finish aluminum against the wood. Original...

Aluminum Plaque, blasted, regrained and painted
Aluminum plaque continued.. I glass media basted the plaque and regrained it on our regrainer (stroke sander). Next was to masked the areas and sprayed the paint. Today I sanded the excess paint off and here you can see the coins temp laying in place. Monday I will cut the mohagany to inlay the plaq...

Re: Aluminum Plaque
Thanks Mike. As im sure you know now.. its fun to get away from the industrial side when you can and make something more creative. I enjoy the aircraft(Air Force) and tooling side of things but you get to have a little fun with projects like this. I dont get too much time to do things like this but ...

Fantastic work Jim!!!!!
I love the design.
What sanding methods do you generally use for your 3D? Do you have any special or custom tools
For sanding the tight areas?
Great job
