Re: Plunge rate
I noticed that when I was digging through the post files this evening - had never seen that before either. Going to have to dig through these a little more. Thank you! As for the app, I wrote that about 6 years ago. VCarve / Aspire don't do so well when you hand them 36,000 circles to cut. The app c...

Re: Plunge rate
I get that Aspire controls the rate, I was saying, as an option, they could alter that output rate to handle the mix between plunge and XY based on the slope. Mach just listens to the GCode. The math is trivial. Here's mine doing rapid hole-cutting for halftones - I wrote the app that creates the GC...

Re: Plunge rate
I think I see what's going on - On yours, the postP dictates the XY speed and the Z speed for feeds, then just outputs G0 or G1 codes. For Mach3, it outputs a feed value per move (G0 or G1), and in that case Aspire is just outputting the raw feed or plunge number. So your version is allowing the mac...

Re: Plunge rate
This is a 5 degree ramping profile, traversing a circle. Tool parameters are 100ipm feed rate, 30ipm plunge rate: N190X0.0000Y0.0000F100.0 - this is the XY feed rate (100ipm) N200G00X6.0000Y1.8750Z0.2000 N210G1Z0.0000F30.0 - this is the plunge rate (30ipm) N220G1X5.9641Y1.8752Z-0.0031 N230G1X5.9281Y...

Re: Plunge rate
I'm a lowly hobbyist with a limited budget, and built my own CNC, so Mach3 was what I could afford at the time. Things have improved quite a bit since then. And I was referring to Aspire when I said they might've changed things in a more recent version. I've used a ShopBot before, and I actually fou...

Re: Plunge rate
I'm at work, but I'll take a look when I'm home. It's possible they've changed this in a recent version. It may also be the post-processor that I'm using - I'm running Mach3, and I see you're on a ShopBot, which I know uses M-Code, not standard GCode. Maybe the difference is there? I'm curious to fi...

Re: Plunge rate
In my classes I use an example of a "simple 3D", actually the VCarve of a Times New Roman letter "A". When toolpathed at 30 (Z) and 120 (XY) and allowed to run, lets say it takes a minute and a half. IF XY are increased to 180 the file is cut a few seconds quicker. If the XY and Z are both set to 6...

Re: Plunge rate
To be clear, I was only speaking only about profile cuts. It's quite possible that during 3D-style finishing cuts Aspire does the "right" thing, but my experience with 2.5D cuts has been otherwise. For the original poster, if you've done a full roughing pass already and are removing a minimal amount...

Re: Plunge rate
Something I've always wished for was a feature whereby if you specified a ramp, that it would limit the descent of the tool to the plunge rate, but allow it to move laterally at up to the feed rate. For example, if I set my plunge to 10 IPM, but my feed at 300 IPM, if I ramp into the material at a 1...

Re: keyboard Shortcuts
I'd kill for shortcuts for:
- Line
- Weld
- Subtract A from B
- Subtract A from B without deleting A
I'd also love it if VCarve paths had an option not to "double back" on themselves. They always cut both directions, and it's a waste of time when doing a big file.

Aspire / VCarve toolpath optimization questions
I started with VCarve, and upgraded to Aspire, and love the software. I'm curious how difficult it would be to enhance the tool path output a little in the following ways: 1) When using the "spiral ramp" option, could you make the cut use a feed rate that's either the plunge rate or the normal feed ...

Re: Artistic images with custom software
Yes, that's something I could do quite easily - I had to write code to maintain the aspect ratio properly, so all the check box would do is turn that off. As a simple "for now" fix, just use MSPaint to rescale the image to have square pixels, then use your software of choice from there. It's a pain,...

Guitar pick box
This is a small guitar pick box I made for my father. He's played guitar my whole life, but since retiring he's started writing his own songs, playing at folk festivals, and generally having a lot of fun with it. This is modeled after the Gibson he plays when he's performing. I used VCarve's vector ...

Re: Artistic images with custom software
I have noticed that the "Rings" option does nothing when I click on it. Is this still something to come? That option wasn't supposed to be visible yet - yes, it's something that's being worked on as a possibilty, but isn't functional yet. For those interested, the latest version of the Halftoner pr...

Search for Avery Paint Mask (or just vinyl paint mask) and you should find it. I bought mine from EBay - here's a current item:
