Re: Cutting Aluminum
I rarely cut it, but I did learn that the grade of aluminum is very important. Several years ago I cut some 5052 (if I remember 3/8" thick) for brackets and being a safe I picked up the phone and called the Onsrud rep. I bought the 1/4" O-flute he suggested and it worked perfectly, FLAWLESS. I used ...

Re: ASPIRE CAMP 2013 !!!
Who's that ugly guy in the back row... oh wait, that's me.
Very good camp and everyone involved to host it and conduct it has done a great job.

Ramp in Vcarve toolpath?
Is there a way to ramp into a Vcarve? I'm cutting marble and the Vbit is plunged in at full depth in the beginning which has a tendency to snap/crack the marble.

Re: Preventing warping / bowing
What you do will depend on the material. I've found skinning the back of composite material like MDF will help opening the back to the same moisture. Making sure the moisture content of the wood is below 15% helps too. The wetter the wood, the more it will warp. Placing your work so air can get unde...

Re: Hello
Welcome. You are right, some of us do lurk on more than one forum. You'll find Aspire capable, but if you use Corel (I use X3) and are comfortable, go for it. I do find myself using Corel less and less though, in fact since I started with Aspire in December I don't think I've opened Corel more than ...

Re: Cribbage Boards
Not specific to the cribbage board (which is beautiful btw) but how to do you finish the carving to get the dark areas that accent the carving? Sand and seal with sanding then some stain process? regular stain, gel stain? Sealed with poly, laquer? I just can't get that look on the carvings I've done...

Re: savinf files
Adding a "Are you sure your not an idiot?" popup when you save would just be annoying. (Speaking to all of us that have done the same thing you did) Here is a tip I've used for years and it works very well at keeping you safe when you do what you did... which is VERY common and logical. When you ope...

Re: Thoughts on how to machine something like this?
If you can removed the neck and mount it at an angle on an special indexer setup... maybe. You would have to use a long bit to get into the crook but you could probably approximate it. Beyond that, I agree that hand carving may be faster in the long run unless you are doing production volumes.

Re: need help
You should save often when working in any program, this applies to everyone. If you can upload your file if it starts happening again someone can take a look at it, I know the devs would want to see it. Don't let some forum member's pet peaves drive you away. If you can post so others can understand...

Re: Feature request...
I'm talking about when in node edit mode. You can hold Alt and it will restrict a node along 0 or 90 degrees. I'm trying to keep a line a specific length and move the node, I want to pivot without stretching. I can go back to select mode but I find myself moving out of node edit mode so much it is s...

Feature request...
Since everyone else is asking for things... :D or if I missed it clue me in on how to do these... Pivot feature. Anchor one end, grab the other and rotate without changing the line length or rotating anchored in the center by default. Perhaps just have the rotate handle respect the anchor setting in...

Re: Ceiling fan medallion
I was running 4 ips XY and 2 ips Z with a 1/4" ballnose. I read the wrong time from my log file, actual cut time was 1 hr 2 minutes. Still not bad but 12 more minutes. My wife did the finish work and I transcribe... ------------------ Apply a coat of shellac before sanding, this makes the "fuzzies" ...

Ceiling fan medallion
Now that the shopbot camp is over I'll share a few projects. This is a ships wheel medallion placed in our kids school room. Ultralight MDF, 32" diameter, attached with keyhole slots. Cut with 1/4" ball nose, 10% stepover, 3 ips, cut time of around 50 minutes. Imported to Aspire and edited slightly....

Re: Aspire DVD
I have had DVD RW drives that handle dual layer DVD's not be able to read single layer DVD's until the firmware was updated. I've also written dual layer DVD's with an HP drive that couldn't be read in regular DVD drives or some players. Once I applied a firmware update to the HP drive that fixed th...

Re: Aspire DVD
I made an ISO image of mine to store in my online software archive (RAID), tossed the case in the trash and filed the DVD itself. I stopped getting attached to "pretty" stuff a long time ago.
I guess everyone is different.
