Re: Taxes

New taxation rules were implemented a few weeks ago. Spotify also is charging tax now, and they are based in Sweden. As far as I recall, Revenue Canada mandated that ALL transactions with a purchaser in Canada will now attract the GST/HST. How it's handled in the back end, I don't know. P.S. If it's...

Re: Help Me Justify Upgrading to V11

In general, I stay with the latest version of software I use, even if I don't use the new features. That gives me future "free" updates and ongoing bug fixes. Having said that, I still have Lotus Notes V9 on this machine... but I'm pretty much out of that business and working just with CAD/CAM relat...

Re: Which new video/graphics card?

16 GB is lots for almost all purposes. My SurfaceBook 2 has that, and even though I often run 2 or 3 copies of VCarve Pro at the same time in addition to Outlook, Excel, and Spotify, the memory usage doesn't max out. Only the Fusion software could use more.

Re: Which new video/graphics card?

As Adrian says, Vectric software doesn't use a graphics co-processor, but likes lots of RAM. Flexi 11 has a RIP, so it probably can use a co-pro if set up properly. There's no point in spending lots of money on a graphics card though. Just about anything on the market these days will handle anything...

Re: Another? hold-down method

Another variation with these parts might have been to use screws up through the spoilboard from underneath if of course you have access to the underside of the spoilboard I thought of trying that. My spoilboard is sitting on a combination T-track and Vacuum table. I would have had to raise the spoi...

Another? hold-down method

This is the second set of top caps for my light fountain projects. They fit exactly into 50 MM OD Acrylic tubes which house the spiralled LED ribbon. Both sets are cut from a baseball bat blank of hard Maple. The first set I cut tall enough to screw each to the spoilboard using 4 diagonal screws at ...

Re: Mom's "Harley Saga" Ends (Finally!)

Scott, I always enjoy your detailed and humorous project stories! You patience and dedication is an inspiration. Thanks for bringing this one full circle. As always, I learned something, or at least had it reinforced. In this case: wood moves, sometimes almost fast enough to see it happening.

Re: web site design

Shopify is the best choice for an all-inclusive package that's easy to set up. It's also easy to maintain, which is a more important factor than ease of setup. The major downside is the monthly charge. My sites are mostly WordPress with a WooCommerce e-commerce plug-in. Since I already have a hostin...

Agreed on the Lie-Nielsen. Any of their tools are worth the price. But if money is not an object, there are these: https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/hand-tools/chisels/bench/69847-veritas-pm-v11-bench-chisels?item=05S2150 which I have had on my wish list since they came out. You will of cou...

Re: 2d image to 3d model

On my first pass at this, I generated the STL using a plug-in for the-software-that-shall-not-be-named 360 but that plugin is no longer supported. That's when I switched to 3D Builder. The results were pretty much the same, and no battles with "free" software that keeps changing the rules like fusio...

Re: 2d image to 3d model

I had the same problem at the beginning. It's a combination of settings in 3D Builder and in the Modelling space in VCarve. I set the Z axis height in 3D Builder to a few cm (on a model that's 550 mm XY) then fiddled with it in VCarve Modelling space to get it exactly the Z height I needed.

Re: 2d image to 3d model

Welcome! There used to be a plug-in for the-software-that-shall-not-be-named 360 but it has been deprecated. However, Windows 10 has a 3D utility that will do this. It's called "3D Builder" and one of the things it can do is map the brightness levels in a 2D image into a 3D structure, which can be e...

Re: Ashes Urn Boxes

Thank you everyone for your generous comments. Here's the other project I've been working on for months now: https://fabrikisto.com/fountain-sculpture-lit/ It's not done, but the plumbing parts I need are somewhere in Amazon limbo. Total machine time was about 22 hours, of which the 3D Drive Rail wa...

Re: Help please.

I haven't taken the plunge yet (just playing with the trial version of Aspire occasionally). The first thing that comes to mind is that the default tools database may not suit your needs. If you've been using VCarve for a while, your tools database is no doubt customized by now. Did you import the V...
