Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. It looks fine. The jagged edges are an artifact caused by the fact that the number of points calculated cannot be infinite. Note that they fall outside the fretboard boundary and therefore if they appear and/or exist in the carving they will be cut off whe...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

Adrian is correct that if you see the files you have opened the zip file. If you don't see the .zip suffix/extension in your download folder, another possibilty is the Windows Explorer (file browser) is hiding the suffix/extension of the files. This is one of the view setting for folders. Windows de...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

10.5 is not the problem. It works fine in 10.5 ;-) Perhaps the instructions are not explicit enough. Change/rename only the suffix of the file name; that is, change ".zip" to ".vgadget". Once you've done this the file icon should change to the gadget icon. Remember where/in which folder it is saved....

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

When you set your job/material, select milimeters instead of inches. The gadget uses whichever you choose at the start. You can also edit job properties and change it and then invoke the gadget.

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

If you asking what I think you asking, no. Once you have closed the gadget it cannot read back and modify the design it created. It does save the previous set of parameters so you can easily recreate your last (but not prior) design and make any desired changes. This is not the same as editing the o...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

Your measurements are correct. The gadget/tool sets the apex of the modeled radius .001" below the surface of your defined workpiece. This will be true regardless of the thickness you set at the start. In practice when setting up to create the toolpath it is best to add/set a bit more space above th...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

Whether or not you need to do a roughing pass depends on how much material you need to remove and whether or not the tool/bit you will use for the finishing path will handle it. That said, unless you have specified an especially tight radius and/or ultra wide fretboard, you are not taking much mater...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

Bill, By default the various components, frets, slots, rails, etc. are "grouped". To ungroup the frets or any other group, select and then right-click for options. Use the one of the ungroup options. Usually ungroup to groups layer is the one you want. Once they are ungrouped you can manipulate or d...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

The question about radiusing the fret slots to match the radius of the fretboard was answered. When creating the tool path for the frets, "project it onto the 3D model". The difference, tang slots, is between fret lines and tang slots. The tool will always draw fret lines which is all you need if yo...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

Hi Greenman, There is no need to unpack the zip file if you are going to use the install gadget function within Aspire. Just rename the file to change the suffix from .zip to .vgadget. Then use the install function. You only need to unpack it manually if you are going to install it manually. To manu...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

Practicing on cheap wood is the right path. If you are totally new to CNC and CAD/CAM, there is a lot to learn about the design tools and your own machine. Mistakes will happen. If you run into any issues with the gadget let me know. As far as hand builds go, you've got about 10 years on me, so I wi...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

Is the gadget able to radius the fret slots them self, like the fretboard? Select Project toolpath onto 3D model The gadget itself does not do that because it generates only the design and model (CAD), not the toolpaths (CAM). But as shown you can project the slot toolpath onto the radius/fretboard...

Re: Guitar fret board maker - Aspire 9.5

Hi there, I'm a luthier taking first spets on CNC machines and software, so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.. But would this gadget work with VCarve Pro also? Thanks! It should work with VCarve Pro (though not VCarve Desktop as Desktop does not support gadgets) but not with all featu...
