Re: Padauk under Deft v. MinWax satin finish
Wow…deep-fried padauk looks more like wenge than some pieces of wenge, Scott.
BTW, to find the specific product information for each finish that was evaluated in that study, you tap on the individual photos of each test result.

Re: Padauk under Deft v. MinWax satin finish
Thank you for the kind words, Scott. Here is a link to the article I referred to: https://www.woodworkerssource.com/blog/woodworking-101/tips-tricks/how-to-finish-african-padauk-wood-to-preserve-the-color/ They even did a before-and-after study of six different padauk finishes, with the “after” resu...

Padauk under Deft v. MinWax satin finish
Padauk, nicely red-orange when au naturale, is well-known to deepen to the look of finished bloodwood underneath several popular polyurethanes. For multi-wood Zank inlay projects, though, it would be better to access to either of padauk’s possibilities: After finding a very detailed, published study...

Re: Inlay Pass Depth Problem
Re: “ I also reject "male" and "female" as being archaic terms leading to the kind of sniggers you get when referring to certain plumbing fixtures as nipples.” I’m not trying to divert the conversation from other more important issues but I will say this about the “male” and “female” jargon—sniggeri...

Steven,
It was a pleasure to read that very lucid summary.
I think you nailed it from A(ngle) to Z(ank).

Re: Calling all V-Carve 'Zank' Gods! Help!
oldcrowe, Your logic that increased inlay depth will increase the contact area between the male and female pieces, and increase the strength of the glue bond, is perfectly correct. In my experience though, Zank inlays that are half the depth of yours are strong and durable enough for cutting board a...

Re: Calling all V-Carve 'Zank' Gods! Help!
Thanks to all for the detailed corrections to my misunderstandings and I’m sorry for needlessly adding confusion to the OP’s thread. I’ll try to shut up now.😳 Except to add that, IMO there is no obvious practical benefit to aiming for a 0.35” deep inlay in the OP’s project, or thusly being required ...

Re: Calling all V-Carve 'Zank' Gods! Help!
JoeBlow, re: “The next place for confusion is that.... male start depth + male flat depth = female final depth”—-That is a mischaracterization of what I said. What I said was: “…note that when you carve the male piece for your inlay the v-bit is going to be cutting the entire piece in one pass at a ...

Re: Calling all V-Carve 'Zank' Gods! Help!
Woof! That was a pretty serious error in that gadget file. The trade-off between higher fragility and longer cutting times (small angle v-bits) versus less engraving depth in the fine detail areas (large angle v-bits) has been discussed quite a bit since the seminal OP by Paul Zank back ‘06…. the co...

re: “ use the same angle v-bit for both the pocket and inlay pieces, For some reason people think they can use, say, a 90 degree for one and a 60 degree for another” —-What adze said, plus some folks recommend always using the identical v-bit for both female and male pieces so as never having to wor...

Re: Calling all V-Carve 'Zank' Gods! Help!
re: “ start depth: almost always zero (0). If you are inlaying in the bottom of a tray this would be non-zero” Not trying to add complexity here, but I actually do use start depth = 0.00 for the female engravings at the bottom of trays. After carving out the tray pocket with an end mill, it’s simple...

Thanks, Tom, I will search yellow mora to learn something about it….always on the lookout for new and interesting wood types.
Have you ever purchased any yellow mora? If, so, from where?
