Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

Thanks to those hard working Amazon drivers working on Memorial Day I received my 1/32" tbn bit. The results were as good as anything I've done with an engraving bit (maybe better) but it only took 1/4th the time. I'm finished using engraving bits. This 4" x 4" took less than 2 hours to carve.

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

I've used 1/4" engraving bits had results not quite as good as the 1/8" engraving bits. My hunch is the ball tip will be able to carve a vertical line to a certain depth while an engraving bit is limited to the angle of the bit. I think that geometry may be more of an important factor than tip diame...

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

Wow, that's impressive! Now I'm convinced I've been wasting a lot of time and bits. It would take me at least 24 hours to carve an 8 X 10 with a 1/8" shank engraving bit. Any faster and the bit would break. The kicker is, it looks like you're getting much better results than me. This is the last on ...

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

I may have to do a test by carving the same image with an engraving bit and tapered ball tip. My theory was an engraving bit will give me better detail, but a 1/32" tapered ball tip should give me better definition lines between dark and light areas. It's a trade off but I'm thinking I may have been...

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

It was candlestone. Thanks! It doesn't seem available when I do an online search. Has anyone seen a source for this.

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

I'm very interested in your color technique! I have been making black and white epoxy filled lithopanes basically using the first part of your system and have had some pretty good results. I'm going to give your method a try when I have some time. Here's a couple of my B & W engravings. The attached...

Re: Looking for material to make lithopanes

Thanks for the useful info! The material I had been using was much softer than countertops. I've found I get much better resolution with a 1/8" engraving bit but unfortunately, a 1/8" bit won't stand a chance with something as dense as Corian. Do you know of any softer material that's opaque, white ...

Looking for material to make lithopanes

A few years ago I purchased online some sheets of 8" X10" X.25" material for carving lithopanes. It was a composite material that is much easier to cut than Corian. I ran out and now I cant find anyone selling it. Does anyone have any ideas of where I can get something similar?

Re: I NEED HELP !!!!

Wow!!! Someone else besides me has a Frank Zappa/epoxy affliction. Maybe we should start a support group before we wind up working on the assembly line at the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen. Nice work! Here's a couple of mine: https://thestuffimade.com/product/zappa-1/ https://thestuffimade.com/pro...

Re: New process 1st attempt

I found an easy way to calibrate the tint in the epoxy for a pretty good contrast. First I cut a diagonal groove about 1/2" x 3" into scrap wood with one end a little deeper than the carving and gradually rising so the other end is at the top surface of the wood. Then mark the spot outside the groov...

Re: A house in wood.

Wow! The only way I have been able to get any decent gray scale in images is by converting them to a halftone. Without doing that I get black and white and very little in between. The detail in the shading of the roof on the second house and in the face is something I haven't been able to achieve wi...

Very impressive! Was that an unedited photo or did you have to do some Photoshop magic to get that result?

Re: I'm starting to figure it out

I should have mentioned that I stained the carving white before I poured the epoxy on the image I posted. All the others I did were on bare wood. All the engravings on the website were done on hard maple which I've found works well. It's very dense with a tight grain so I get good engraving resoluti...
