Re: CNC recommendation

Wow Steve, that camaster might be just what I'm looking for. Just a tad above the budget so I'll do some research and it might be the one.

Thanks.

CNC recommendation

I'm looking to upgrade my CNC machine and would like some recommendations. I've had an Xcarve for the last 3+ years and am getting tired of it's quirks, it's been a good machine to learn on but want more. My budget is in the $10k to $12k range and I don't want anything made in mainland China or anyt...

Distorted Text like DM Hack 170

Is there an easy way to distort text like the main "IRISH PUB" text on the sign or do I need to convert to curves and resize each letter to approximate it? I tried putting the word on a curve but it just moves the letter, doesn't resize it.

Thanks,

Tim.

Re: Clock Face 3D model Help

I agree with Adrian.. I've done several clock faces and always just vcarve a set of vectors and it turns out great. As for 3d models, I have a set of 3 standard tapered ball nose bits I use for finishing: 1mm, .75mm and .5mm (yes, I use inches as my projects). I find for some reason that tapered BN ...

Re: A simple way to make inlays

As far as Tim's question if he's snapping an 1/8" cutter when it's cutting only cutting 0.1" deep I suspect his feeds and speeds are far too aggressive for his machine and the cutter. I recently cut some beech using a single-flute 1/8" cutter with 1/8" shank and 3/4" cutting edge length at 18,000 r...

Stacked Text start/stop depth question

I've got a question.. I followed the Vectric tutorial on making stacked text signs and they have you using start depth as 0 for every level and adding document variables to get the DOC. TT-.1 top text BT=.1 bottom text Top text: start 0 DOC: ${TT} Bot text: start 0 DOC: ${TT} + ${BT} (using Amana 60...

Re:

I've found that clamps and screws work the best and I can't remember a time in 2 years that they have failed other than me not making it tight enough. Tape on the other hand fails me quite often and I stopped using it... until I discovered using painters tape with CA glue in-between. That stuff work...

Re: Getting good use from a single model

Get a good UV filtering finish on it.. all the purpleheart I ever had faded to dark brown after awhile. My research shows it's mainly due to UV light. If my memory is correct, you can slow the process but it will happen eventually unless it sits in a dark closet somewhere. That is the main reason I ...

Re: Estimated Processing Times

I had a time when I was doing a 3D Xmas ornament and I noticed my time skyrocketing after changing some bit info. Turns out I had select a 1mm ballnose bit instead of a 1mm tapered ballnose bit which was the difference. It seems that tapered ballnose bits require much less time to cut than a straigh...

Re: setup is in inches, but gcode is mm

I won't be near my machine for a few days and wonder what the implication of this is as far as what gets carved? Will the inches get converted to the proper mm number or does it assume the number being used is in mm which would result in smaller than expected carves?

Re: little extra tick marks

I've learned there are lots of little tricks you can do to use toolpaths in ways that don't seem straight forward to get a look that seems simple to achieve! Sometimes it's using a "non-standard" type of bit with a particular type of toolpath. Many times I'll read a post like this one and smack my f...

Re: 3d Model problem - ring around object

I'm having the same issue on Vcarve supplied 3d clipart and am using the double heart and rings. The line around the heart is related to the angle of the vbit and it's not getting close enough to the heart. Apparently, the clear-out section of the vcarve toolpath is not clearing out close enough to ...

Thanks. I emailed it to you. Had to zip it to a .rar file because the .crv was too large for email at 14mb.

Re: 3d Model problem - ring around object

Just a thought are you using a draft as I have seen this happen when I used it. Phill Not sure what you mean by "using a draft", but I have not carved it. I've imported it into a brand new CRV file and did the exact same steps and got it to look the way I want it so maybe a bug in vcarve or somethi...
