Re: Question on Cypress

Like you I was interested in Cypres because it's good for outside. The reason being is the fibers are interlocking keeping cracks down to a minimum. I have about three hundred bd ft. of 12 quarter that's been setting for about two years. I hesitate using it because it's very fuzzy and soft as balsa....

Re: Warping & cupping on my latest project

Let me back up for a moment. As far back as the sixteenth century, artists were painting on Oak panels. Back then they were using old, weak, no good Hide Glue. But the panels are with us today. And they all had back supports, cleats. I'm not fond of gluing plywood as a backing. That's a guarantee fo...

Re: wood filler for exterior sign

Bobo, No matter how many buscuits or how good the glue, it will always show a crack with time. The technique that will solve the problem if carbon fiber laid up with epoxy. Another option, if the scarf joint is too difficult, is to open up the edges with a V bit and filling with epoxy, then lay up w...

Re: wood filler for exterior sign

Bobo, This is about a difficult problem as an artist can have. Even if you get a beautiful solution for now the boards will continue to move. That means there will be a crack later on. The best joint for this kind of work is a Scarf Joint. I'd then cover the seam with a 2" strip of Kevlar and epoxy....

Re: Vcarve finishing.

That's right a full coat of shellac is best. Then I give the letters a coat coat of the same color as the background. This protects any leaks from letting paint through. When you remove the mask, be sure to pull it away from the edges of the cut. That way you won't have to worry about any lifting of...

Dave,

Another outlet with creative sign people is the 3D sign forum. Lots of good people over there also.

Re: First Venture Into Sign making

Naw it can't be. Tell me it aint so. Everytime I think I've got things figured out, along comes some kid, posting a beautiful sign, and telling how it's their first attempt. Dang it, can you imagine what she could do with a little practice. I'm not about to post any of my first attempts. This is too...

Re: Sizing Pockets for carved 3D letters - How much relief?

Thanks very much for your post.

When we started out, all of us had wobbley legs, not know if it would find an audience. How long would it be before we'd be recognized? Thanks to folks like you we're up and growing.

Keep posting with your questions. We love them.

Robert,

I guess what you are saying is, HDU letters are good in a HDU background?
I'd never expected.

Re: Sizing Pockets for carved 3D letters - How much relief?

Roy, I'm not too fond of suggesting offset with this kind of process for two reasons. First it depends on the kind of materials and second is the size of lettering. For example a 24" DiBond letter will expand more than a 4". Also if I'm using a MDO background with a MDO letter it's not a factor. For...

Re: Sizing Pockets for carved 3D letters - How much relief?

Terry, Your post is timely and a good one. The question of what is the standard to the amount of offset for pocketing brings back memories. I too went through the search without any resolve. I'm suspicious there isn't a correct answer. It depends on the look you are after and what materials you are ...

Re: Wacom bamboo pressure sensitivity

Greetings James, Thanks very much for taking time out from your schedule to shed light on the subject. I also received a note from Brian, over on the SB forum, letting me know it was not an issue. So now I can drain my wallet and get a Intuious 5. The old wallett is too thick anyway, which makes it ...

Re: Gold Leaf -ing?

Leo, I don't think fellows who are gilders would look down on anyone who's learning the trade. You gotta get over that first. To get started you can view video's on you tube just like Michael suggested. I'd suggest you find a Letterhead fellow near by and see if he would help. What part of the count...
