if you mean similar to the attached, i used the dome (available standard (sfik) in VCP clip art). As I recall, I "stretched it" - setting depth to suit, and sized the diameter. array copied and cut (with a ball nose bit).

silly me, i've been cutting metal on my cnc all these years. thank you for the idea to do just that - sand cast (much better process when i've more than one to make). presume you cut in wood (in reverse), then pressed the wood into the sand? If more to it please share your method. thank you.

If I'm not out of place: if keen on 3D: have you considered FOSS applications to model the leg, then export to STL, and import the STL into VCarve-Pro? also, multi-sided design and machining all within VCarve-Pro? from within VCP: perhaps beginning with one of the domes (included model with VCP). stretch model oval(ish) and draw rectangle boundary vector sized and positioned to demarcate the "3d" slice that appeals. then rough/finish, drill/pocket [project onto 3d model option selected] as described by others...
