Re: Is there a way to mimic the rounding toolpath rotary gadget with tapers?

Thank you. Could you please post a short code file showing what you suggest? I can view the code in Notepad++ and hopefully figure it out. For example, a tapered cone 2" long, going from 3" to 2.5" spun continuously? It would help me a LOT. This is exactly what I want to use my rotary for. If you wi...

Re: Is there a way to mimic the rounding toolpath rotary gadget with tapers?

I think my question was improperly worded. I was thinking of using square stock that is tapered, initially implementing the optimizing raster method of machining, followed by a radial rotary finishing operation.

Where in the setup are you defining start and finish radii of the cone?

Re: Is there a way to mimic the rounding toolpath rotary gadget with tapers?

The fluting toolpath is one method. This would work for Vcarve as well as Aspire. Thank you. Can you explain where you are dictating the tapering while fluting, along with the flute spacing? Where do I find that? It seems that using flat planed, tapered sides is not an option, which is a shame. Nev...

Re: Is there a way to mimic the rounding toolpath rotary gadget with tapers?

Thank you Steve. I opened your file, and notice the estimated run time for one piece is 3.75 hours. Is that the best that can be hoped for with an indexer? Even with a larger roughing bit and softer wood, I'd imagine no less than 1/2 the program's estimated time. This is why the idea of starting wit...

Is there a way of implementing the rotary rounding toolpath gadget with 4 sided tapered stock to make cones?

Hi, I'm tasked with creating 8" tall truncated cones with a large difference in large and small radii. The cone is 4" wide at the "top" and only 2" in diameter at the bottom. We were thinking of first cutting four sided tapered stock that would then have its corners rounded, leaving much less to do ...

Re: Raised text merged with 3D models

Wow! Thank you ever so much for this explanation. Woefully needed all these years!
I needed to know why as much as how, and you hit a home run. Much appreciated!

Re: Raised text merged with 3D models

Thank you, Steve. Can you explain what you mean by "You might want to add draft just to the letters because the vertical sides won't machine well". "Draft"? So, will the vertical sides machine well?

Raised text merged with 3D models

This is probably an old subject... but it's not sinking in. I'm still confused. I import a clipart dragon, dropping it into a shallow dish I type the word "dragon" in block letters, placing it on top of the model, merged. I'm speaking of flat topped letters, no curvature. What's the trick to getting...

Re: Engrave raised letters on a 3D surface

When I say "see the raised text in straight forward manner", I mean having a utility (click of a button) that smoothly mills the vertical sides of raised text merged with a 3D model so that the letters are profile milled with the bit varying in Z up and down the underlying component without any scar...

"If you have one (or purchase one), try rotating the monitor itself, then adjust the Vectric software window to “go vertical long-wise” to match the monitor after rotating your job." Belated thanks for your reply. If you see this, please explaing what is specifically entailed in "adjusting the Vectr...

Re: Engrave raised letters on a 3D surface

I realize this post is a couple of years old, but the issue is a brand new problem for me. Is it summarily true that the task of modeling (and perhaps milling) raised letters in Aspire is an oversight or glitch on the part of Vectric? If not, why all the chicanery to "get around" the issue? It's a g...

Can x,y axis orientation in setup screen be rotated?

Hi, the subject says it all. I often work with long sheets measuring 48 X 120 inches, using a router that has Y as the long axis. Proper export of the file requires a rotate, which makes the scale of the object shrink to fit.

Can X,Y be flipped on the screen?

x,y axes orientation on screen

Is there any way of having the Y axis run horizontal when Aspire boots? I frequently work with long rectangles in the order of 1.4 X 3.5 meters and having Y oriented vertically with a CNC machine that sees Y as the long axis is quite a nuisance. When I rotate the geometries to post, the considerable...

tutorial for working with STL mesh files, and profile cuts

Hi, I've scanned the library of plentiful tutorials but didn't come across any that focus on working with STL/mesh files. Are there any? Can someone tell me how I'd go about using a circumscribed vector I've drawn (around a laser scanned mesh object exported in STL format) to act as a (apparently ne...
