Re: Need help with engraving small characters

Last night I finished intalling the new 1.5kw water cooled spindle. Good grief the difference it made is incredible. Lines and characters are crisp and the actual width and shape as intended now. Not to mention the thing produces very little sound and no vibration. The spindle, mount bracket, VFD, a...

Re: Need help with engraving small characters

I think this explains alot. I've never run the router at its lowest speed. But, damn! The shaft is so warped that it can't even make a full revolution due to the binding. I've always felt that there was way too much vibration... And there sure as hell appears to be just that. This is the 3rd Trend r...

That's been in the back of my mind during this process. Maybe a small strategically placed "leak" closer to the vacuum unit could help that.

Re: Router - Pros and Cons

You will notice a huge difference with noise levels as for the water cooling is the pump included in the price or do you need to sort that side yourself, mine runs from a cheap pond pump. Got a 25 ltr barrel that the pump sits in, pump head is about 1220mm (4') which is more than enough for my syst...

Re: Router - Pros and Cons

I went into the router vs spindle thing thinking I could buy 8 routers for the cost of a spindle, but now after burning up 3 routers in less than a year. I just ordered a 1.5Kw water cooled spindle. The spindle, VFD, mounting bracket, and water pump set me back about $750. I went with a guy out of P...

Re: Vaccum Pump for my 36X24 DIY vac tableI

I use a 6 hp shop vac for my vacuum clamp table. I have 6 air pickups between 2 sides of the base. I get extremely good holding power if all of the holes are sealed. The shop vac is lound, but I tried a borrowed 6 cfm vacuum pump and it just didn't compare. I'd like to try a bigger pump, but I'm cer...

Re: Z axis zeroing/tool setting

DeskCNC. It has a standard homing script, and I know I can home an axis individually. I just might have to modify the Z-axis script for this purpose. I assume a soft metal like copper would be the best choice for contact to sensitive bit tips? Note. I am pretty mechanically inclined. But a complete ...

Z axis zeroing/tool setting

I've been using the archaic method of stepping down the Z-axis/bit until it causes drag on a piece of paper. Its been faily accurate, but I feel I can do better. I've looked at the tool setters with the little light and that looks like it could be a tad more accurate than what I'm doing. But what ab...

Re: Need help with engraving small characters

With a 24X24 table seems like you could make a 10-11" one of these and at with spindle at 12,12 would magnify any Z-plumb issues. Stone age but good. I guess I could bend a piece of 1/4" rod as your pic shows and then fasten (epoxy or whatnot) a dial indicator to that for a quick n dirty but accura...

Re: Need help with engraving small characters

Couple of things worth checking, is the laminate sitting on a perfectly flat surface & have you trammed the router to ensure it is sitting square to the flat surface. For this sort of fine detail work any discrepancies will cause problems. Yes, I have made my own vacuum clamping table. The table ba...

Re: Need help with engraving small characters

I have tried some new things and come to what I think is a good conclusion. Please hear me out and let me know if this could be an issue. I obtained some Rowmark stock that has a .003" engraving depth. Today I did some runs with some different fonts and bits playing with character spacing and font s...

Re: Need help with engraving small characters

There are a few things you need to pay attention to when using engraving stock such as Rowmark. Ordering the correct material is critical. If you have a thin cap material(.002" or .003" thick, you can reduce the depth of engraving and get finer detail and smaller letters. If you are using a materia...

Re: Need help with engraving small characters

Thanks for the input gentlemen. I did some test runs today with single line fonts on .14" and .15" text and I believe I have what I want there with no extra work. My favorite was Univers 5L (yeah, I know its 5 lines). Using a 60 deg/.010 tip bit at a depth of .018 seems to be the magic spot for me. ...
