Re: Why would we want to make dovetails

Why would we want to make dovetails????? To anyone that is in the KNOW - we know we don't need to. To anyone who is NOT in the know - well that is another story. In the past is was as you said - just the way it was done. It WAS a sign of a well made draw. Today - go to Home Depot - or a furniture st...

Re: 3D Carving Times

I just upgrades from VCarve Pro to Aspire 11.5 because I want to venture deeper into the 3D world with my Onefinity Woodworker. One simple question: Should I realistically expect 3d carves to take triple or quadruple the carving time? Or am I missing a setting somewhere? . Thanks in advance for all...

Re: Using the 4th axis as an indexer

... On my bucket list I want to make a brake for my rotary axis that is G-Code driven. I think what you have to do is something like the signals for spindle, air, dust collection. Depends on what you have for a controller. Also, I have created a brake from an old auto air conditioner clutch; low vo...

Re: Using the 4th axis as an indexer

That sounds like an awesome test. In industry I have forgotten many time to add the brake to the axis in the G-code and machining was still OK but it does add stress to the axis drives. Keeping in mind that industrial machines are in a different universe with rigidity and power. Gary C posted a vide...

Re: Using the 4th axis as an indexer

Rcnewcomb - that is awesome Jimcad, you would need to have an additional axis drive built into the control box to drive the fourth axis - generally the "A" axis. What a lot of (I think most hobby machines) do not have that sort of build. Therefore, axis swapping comes into play. Swapping is still a ...

Re: Chip load calculation discrepancy

We hear the sages on here with the mantra "produce chips, not dust". Yea, ok, show me how to do that on a detailed 3D carve maestro with a 12000 RPM spindle and a 1/32 bit. I dare ya! LOL Ted, Why do you need to be so insulting in your posts. Many times you do it and not just to me. I am not a maes...

Re: Chip load calculation discrepancy

This stuff is not an exact science. As an engineer that spent decades in manufacturing and using math and formulas daily on a wide variety of CNC machines, I am well aware of the calculations and yes they are certainly a great place to start, but not necessarily gospel. Yes - chipload IS important b...

Re: Crossover Network Cable. . .???

I have all the necessary ingredients to retrofit my machine from Mach3 to Centroid Acorn. The only thing I have missing it time! Once I have "time" I will also say goodby to Mach3. If any readers are using Mach3 - no worries - don't panic. Nothing wrong with Mach3 - please continue to enjoy it. I ha...

Re: Drilling and sanding on rotary axis

I have yet to try making a pen on my rotary axis. I see it as a doable process, but have not tried it. I know you know the diference between a rotary axis and an indexer. I do as well. Being that we have both worked in an industrial industry where each of those units are popular in machining and eac...

Re: V12 COMING APRIL 2024 🎉

HMMMMMM??? Maybe I heard the message incorrectly Ted can upgrade from 4.5 to 11.5 for $400 Then V12 is FREE??? I have upgraded at EVERY upgrade at $400 From 4.5 to 11.5 that is 7 upgrades at $400 each Leo has already paid $2800 in the same time frame as Ted. Ted only pays $400 for the SAME thing - A...

Re: V12 COMING APRIL 2024 🎉

Upgrades? Subscriptions? If I upgrade every time Vectric releases a new upgrade - like V12 - it is around two years. So that is around $200 per year. If I don't want to ungrade I still have a fully functioning really nice package that continues working - SWEET. So many software companies are going s...

Randal that is a very good instructional video. I like that while mentioning LMT-Onsrud cutters he was not pushing for sales. Bravo on that. I have been thinking about a cutting parameters video for a long time now. Right now I am up to my eyeballs building a laundry room and making kitchen cabinets...

Re: Cheap End Mill Was Wrong Size

Calipers are not a precise Measuring Tool they were made for quick measurement checks and not for accuracy measuring. Micrometers are the go to tool for measuring accuracy and yes it takes time to develop the skill of using one. I come from 30 some odd years working in an Aerospace and Industrial Q...
