Re: Photo vcarve to edgelit acrylic.
Has anyone tried import a Phot vcarve file into aspire to carve into a piece of acrylic for an edgelit. Just curious thinking about giving this a shot as I think it might look pretty trick.   This is the only thread I remember seeing about PVC cut into clear acrylic and edge lit ,,,...

Re: Oval Sculptured Box
Glenn, Would you post the toolpaths that you used to create the profile of the photo you posted. using the molding tool I get a cut depth thickness exceeds material thickness error . After struggling a while with it and watching videos I decided to just to ask for help. mikeg I didn't try molding b...

Re: Oval Sculptured Box
The out and interior sides could be sloped using the flute tool and/or molding toolpath, a large stepover with flute tool would give a nice fluted appearance too ... it would take some thought in double sided machining

Fly tying station
Nothing fancy, just a utilitarian project... still needs dowels for thread bobbins and a lacquer finish, was thinking about just buying one but already had the materials and always plenty of time..

Re: Engineering Edgelit
nice job!
I run saw cut edges on router table before removing paper, fence set very shallow, passes till clean... no sanding needed, just a medium slow pass with a cheap MAPP torch and edges are polished, takes very little practice... plenty of youtube videos

Re: Custom datum
Leo did actually answer the original question in the first reply post. I was going to add the offset option as an alternative but the OP seemed happy with the answer and the thread moved on from there. sorry Adrain, didn't get that the OP seemed happy, thought that his comment was another question ...

Re: Custom datum
I have some boards to engrave but there is no corner to use for the datum and the exact centre will be problematic. Is it possible to define a custom datum like in the centre of the hole? Since no one actually answered you original question, I'll have a go. Yes you can set an arbitrary origin point...

Re: V Carving into Bricks
you might consider creating a cut file (vectors) and sub the cutting to a local monument company? I've done similar with a couple waterjet jobs, just ask what format they can use. Saved a friend a few bucks by creating the files .... just a thought as mine was not Vcarved though

Re: Custom datum
And to answer your original question  as Leo said, you can use the handle hole as the center datum point as well... a dowel pin could locate if you have many parts, along with an etched profile line or add a reference strip to file drawing or a square ... many ways to relocate a 2d part that's...

Re: Custom datum
The framing square will certainly work as long as you have a reference point for an odd shape with no square sides (such as handle hole), If not the pocket or profile etched line works nicely, as well makes for a good part hold down, if snug or a couple tabs of double sided tape It is very easy to c...

Re: Custom datum
I should add, the method will work with most any shape as long as filets are added to the pocket to allow for sharp points, (tool clearance) and I'll usually add a finger relief for removing part

Re: Custom datum
yes, change the file work origin to center if not already, offset the profile vector outward slightly and use to machine a pocket in a scrap spoil board for the cutting board to fit, save the new origin for subsequent work .... for simple engraving an etched profile line would probably work fine too...
