Re: UCCNC & Rotary Control
Just thinking out loud and wondering about your steps/unit settings of 33.3333 Assuming a 1.8 degree full step angle and 1:10 reduction, the axis should rotate 0.18 degrees per step. That is 5.55555 steps per degree and means your stepper drive is set up for 6 microsteps/full step. Somewhat unusual ...

Demon-Proof Box
As an attempt to test and demonstrate my efforts making compound angle joints (finger or dovetails), I built a pentagonal box (i.e. five box sides at 108 degrees) with the box sides slanted 30 degrees from vertical. Came out pretty well. While the toolpaths for the actual joints were calculated with...

Re: Rotary machining time
If you are using the standard G94 feedrate method, your controller is likely not going to calculate the rotation speed correctly, because it will probably interpret the linear feed rate (in/min or mm/min) as degrees/min for the rotation axis. Also, depending on zero at axis or zero at surface the ma...

Re: Rotary...Can I cut below the rotation axis?
The segmenting would surely be necessary for larger projects.
But my little snake head is only about 2.5" x 1.7" x 1.7".
I suppose that can be done with a double sided cut.
Actually, I will use the tool path array to make 6 of them at the same time.

Re: Rotary...Can I cut below the rotation axis?
Thanks, that is what I suspected. I think I will try a 2-sided job. It will however be a challenge requiring a rather long bit to avoid collet collision. There will be an unmachined undercut behind the fangs but I can fix that with a needle file. Tabs will be interesting as well... I had to position...

Rotary...Can I cut below the rotation axis?
I wanted to try an s-shaped model on the rotation axis (actually a snake head). But that required machining some bits that were below the rotation axis (in z-direction). According to the simulation that does not seem to be possible (or I did not figure out how). Does anybody know how to do this? Phy...

.....I could not care less about "handcrafted" anything. I don't care how it got made. Is it functional? durable? affordable? pleasing to the eye? That is what is important.... Agree. I guess wood carvers complained in ancient Egypt about the first lathes. And we know hand weavers started riots abo...

Re: Model import
I suspect this is just due to the limitations of full rotary machining. Since the "y" axis (or whatever the axis is perpendicular to the rotation axis on your machine) can not move, there is no way for the bit to reach the inseam of the pants. All it can do is going up and down the z-axis in a radia...

Re: Why would we want to make dovetails
In a way I agree with you. CNC machining opens up opportunities that were impossible by hand and even making dovetails may have been just too much work or required too much skill or an unavailable machine. That said, many of the fancy CNC-compatible joints I have seen are more driven by esthetics or...

Is there any hope there will be simulation of undercut toolpaths (and use of undercutting bits like keyhole, threading or ball plunge bits) in a future version? If not, is it too difficult or just not worth the effort?

Baltic Birch is not all made equal. The stuff from big box stores and some lumber stores is sometimes not that well glued. I drive down to Denver once a while and pick up a few sheets of ApplePly brand plywood. Quite expensive but superior quality. Other good quality BB I found was Europly but I bou...

Re: Do these AI gadgets have humor?
I have not tried the Google tool yet. The Copilot does a reasonable job but when you ask for such a scherenschnitt it will create an image that has the look and style of such a thing, but it violates the key feature a few times which is that all black parts are one contiguous piece of paper. I had t...

Do these AI gadgets have humor?
I needed a simplified representation of a Sheltie dog as a pattern for an inlay. Did not find much online so I tried the Copilot engine in the Edge browser. See the first result below, not too bad. (If you are not familiar with the "Scherenschnitt" term, this is an old folk art style from Germany an...

.....I did joints like that years ago using an incra fence on the table router..... I know that is technically possible, but it is just so frigging difficult (man, just look at the process in the video). Actually, that is what got me started with my CNC joint obsession. Doing such precision repeati...
