If you can clamp the seat vertically under the CNC spindle with the front edge up you could use the CNC and a profile toolpath to follow the curve. I have that capability but realize it is a rare option for most.

Re: Help with Roundover bit following edge of a chair seat
You can map a profile toolpath to a 3D model/object, so if you have a 3D model of your chair seat without the rounded over front edge you could use it and a straight vector with a profile toolpath using a roundover bit mapped to the 3D object. What the results would be with a roundover bit moving up...

Re: Love the drafting tools/features.
With Danish Oil Finish on it.
This one I used straps between the front and back legs rather than the top stretcher and back edge of the top. Less webbing/strap needed.

A little dark, but of all the photos I took it shows cherry wood most like I see it in person. This one I used straps between the front and back legs rather than the top stretcher and back edge of the top. Less webbing/strap needed.

Re: Cutting steel on my radial axis
Danish oil seemed dry enough today to put the parts back together. I was a bit worried that the finish would clog the bolt holes making some drill bit cleanup necessary, but that didn't happen. All bolts slid in easily and the binding bolts tightened down securely. Quick photos: Cherry 45 horizontal...

Re: Cutting steel on my radial axis
creatively conceived, and nicely executed. Thanks. This cherry version is now on it's freshly applied second coat of Danish oil. It should be a stunner once all done and posed for some good photos. The steel pivot bolts have proven to be a great reliable solution to keeping it together, letting the...

Re: Love the drafting tools/features.
This time, on a different prototype, the moulding toolpath cam in handy. I needed to round over the sharp entry edge of a slot that a strap slip into. The strap folds over the edge and I didn't want the sharp edge to wear into the strap. Slot roundover.jpg Using a 1/8" ball nose bit I put a 1/8" rad...

Re: Cutting steel on my radial axis
Got the binding bolt holes cut this morning. Enough done now to stand the table up with the top attached.

The top is still waiting for edge details. Not in a rush to finalize those. 4D

Re: Cutting steel on my radial axis
From the picture, a roto-hinge doesn't look to hard to make. Two short dowels with a hole, a couple of washers and a bolt with a lock nut. I went down that path for a couple of iterations. Binding post, two bearings, but cover plates were needed to keep the bearings in. Bought some brass plate to s...

Re: Cutting steel on my radial axis
I looked into roto-hinges and the ones I've seen are too big in diameter for the 7/8" wide and thick legs. Also much more expensive than the binding bolts, pivot bolts and washers used so far.

Re: Cutting steel on my radial axis
Got the holes CNC cut for the binding bolts that intersect these pivot bolts. Cherry leg frame.jpg Fit could have used a little allowance. The parts all fit as intended but snug against the pivot bolts so they don't spin easily. I'll use a 5mm diameter diamond file I have and see if I can take a lit...

Re: Finding accurate Zero for the Y axis
The top of my tailstock is a centered rectangle. Many moons ago I took the time to carefully scribe a centerline down the middle. When centering my Y axis for a center rotary job I sneak whatever bit I'm using up to that line, Once there for Y center I put in +.0625 or +.125 or +.0938 as half the di...

Re: Is there any hope for Linux users?
I don't expect to see a linux version, but as the controller software for my CNC is on a Linux machine it would be nice to have Aspire on it so I could quickly edit toolpaths when I see I've made a mistake. The trip back up the stairs to my windows PC in only a time waster balanced with the exercise...

Re: Cutting steel on my radial axis
Another idea was to make a push button release, much the same as a push button depth stop for a drill press. Pushed in it would release the threads of an intersecting bolt, but when the button was pushed out by a conical spring behind it tapped threads would be engaged. Flaw was the the bolt could s...

Re: Cutting steel on my radial axis
Just for clarity, this is what the end goal for these bolts looks like. Cut off with ends filed to take off the sharp edge. Pivot Bolts 1.jpg They slip through the outer legs of my TV tray table design, through a washer, then into the inner legs where they are pinned with an intersecting binding bol...

Re: Cutting steel on my radial axis
I've got some 30db ear muffs, so can't attest to the actual sounds made. I could tell that the loudest sound was the initial stepover move each time the rotary reversed direction for the moulding toolpath. Stepping in removed the most material. Stepping out I could barely hear it as most of t...
