Chop Chop, Whiz, Whiz...

Post by BradyWatson »

Oh what a relief it is!!! :)

I got permission from one of my customers that I do laser scanning for, to cut out one of his carvings in large scale. The original was about 12X20" & I scaled it up to 48X80". I cut it out of a single slab of 2" Trupan Ultralight MDF. It took me 3hrs to do the rough out passes and about 17hrs to do the finishing pass. I roughed out with a 1/2" end mill & finished with a 3/8" ball. It only took a few minutes to do the profile pass with a 1/2" end mill. It came out great!

You can see the scale compared to the shop overhead door & my screw gun. I took a screenshot of the Cut3D simulation in Mahogany.

Nice (and yet large) work Brady! :o

Now, I am most surprised that you have chosen to do it with Vectric's Cut3D?... instead of your other high $$$ package!

Why?

Looks very nice on the design part and the cutting. Just curious what stepovers you used and how much hand work you left yourself. And I second Paco's question about using cut3d instead of the "other art software" for tool paths.

Hey guys, thanks for the compliments. I used C3D on this to see how well it would work on something this size. Yes I could have chosen to use other software in my arsenal, but with anything else in this world, you have to try new things. C3D by no means replaces my professional software, but it does automate a couple different strategies that are difficult or impossible to do in any other CAM package.

I typically run stepovers in the 5-12% range. In this case, 10% or .03". It was a lot of fun to see something that I lasered blown up to an obscene scale :)

Thanks Dasch. I can't take credit for the design...like I said it was laser scanned from my customer's hand carved panel...and I had to get permission to cut it. I love this panel's design...in ANY scale!
