Light box for lithophane
I need a source for back light boxes for 5x7 and 8x10 lithophanes I make. I have tried many different homemade frames with limited success. I am looking for an inexpensive source for back lighting. I am cutting many lithophanes and need the backlighting out of the way. I do not really want to make them myself, liability and not that good at it. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

I've used these before - backlit photo frame. They have a larger one, also. I simply cut out a piece of verneer for placing the litho.

They aren't bad, and they're cheap!

Re: Light box for lithophane
Just how much space is there light to the litho? Are the lights right on the surface of the litho? For a 3x3 litho for a night night I am using a flat 3x3 led night light from Walmart and double face taping it directly to the light.

The box that is in my picture is 8 X 10 X 2.5 the leds are only on towards the back and just one strip of 12 leds the top and 1 strip of 12 leds on the bottom. A coil of Leds that I show will make about 25 lithos.

Re: Light box for lithophane
On the lithos I have done, i have just made a simple box for them.
.75 thick stock approx 2" wide.
cut a 1/8" channel aprox 1/4" back from the front side, and a 1/4" wide x 1/4" deep rabbet along the back edge.
Measured the sided and cut the strip to length with mitered corners. Installed the litho in the channel then glued and clamped the frame together.
Measured and cut 2 led strips to fit into the top and bottom of the frame, wired them up and then hot glued them into position.
set a piece of 1/4" thick hardboard into the back and called it good. In the backerboard, I have also cut a keyhole into the top that way the frame can either be placed on a table or hung on a wall.

Re: Light box for lithophane
I've used this on lithos. Simply apply to the entire surface. Best I recall it was about $30 and the guy sent the initial piece pre-wired to show me how it is done. Instructions are on his website/Good product, you can run it off batteries, add an on/off switch. You can get battery holder and switch at Radio Shack.

Re: Light box for lithophane
I just started making lithophanes with supplies from thecandlestonestore.com I also am looking for an easy way to light my end product. Anyone else have ideas. I don't like making my own boxes and would prefer a frame the stone would just fit into. They have some on their web site but they are always sold out. Chris

Re: Light box for lithophane
Been doing lithos for years, have yet to find anything close that would fit the bill.
If you did, you would likely go into sticker shock.
I make my own because I use various sizes and also fairly cheap, probably less than $10 in parts. Its all in the labor, once you get a system down they go pretty quick.
