Whitetail Obsession Crib Board

Post by jay pieper »

Been working with solid surface material lately, Corian in this case. Deer hunting in November in Wisconsin
is a big deal. I decided to use the v-carve inlay methods to achieve what I wanted. Here I decided to use 4
differn't colors of corian to be inlayed into the cover of the cribbage board. The cover starts out as a 8x8 inch
piece that has a vcarve pocket of .2inch pocket with advanced toolpath and 1/8 inch endmill. The text, deer,
grass and log are put in differn't layers and machined in differn't colors at a start depth of .1 and a flat depth of
.1 inchs. What worked for me was to mirror the deer for instance, machine the the piece and glue into the cover blank
after it was dried cut it flush to the cover with a bandsaw, this will allow you room to glue the next color in
cover. Repeated the process for all the colors in the cover. Went back to the CNC put the cover back in the
alignment jig and ran a flatting toolpath with a .25 endmill until the cover blank was flat and flush and then
alot of wet sanding and buffing. I hope the post made sense, I tend to get ahead of myself.

Nice board, and the inlays look great. No room for a single screwup....

Did you resaw the lid and base to achieve a good grain match between the two? Very nice work.

Tom to answer your question about resawing:
1. The solid surface material I used (Corian) is .5 inchs thick so I use 2 pieces laminated together
to make the base of the cribbage board. This is than surfaced on both sides to .8 inches thick.

2. The cover is selected from another piece of corian that you thinks looks good with the base you
made earlier.

3. The only resawing I do is between the differn't colors that are inlayed in the cover for the
images that are used. And really the use of the band saw is to cut the mirrored image free
of the cover so you can add the next color(image) to the cover.

Holy cow that is amazing! Very well done indeed.
I have inlaid wood into Corian but have yet to do the inlay itself in Corian but you have certainly
Inspired me! Did you use any type of polish or just the wet sand/buff process?

Im impressed!!!

Beautiful job, Excellent craftsmanship!
One question. What type of glue did you use? Corian glue or something else?

Thanks for the nice comments on the cribbage board gentlemen.

Joz.. I use Rapid Fuse it is a DAP product and it sets in 30 seconds,
and believe me once it sets you will not move it. Works really well.
