Very slow graphics response

Post by Catalystracing »

Hi all,

New to Vcarve and this business, but have had many years CNC and CAD experience.
We cut EV foam sheets for boat builders as a non slip decking option.
When I started in this new job the computer I was using was specd ok for Vcarve but had other major reliability issues so the CAD PC was upgraded.

It is a new PC with an AMD Ryzen 5-2600 Six core 3.4ghz
nVidia GForce RTX2060
16GB ram
500GB SSD
This was speced by our main company in the states that uses Rhino also.
Running lastest Vcarve 64bit version 9.517
All drivers are updated and I have the nvidea control set to max performance.

So while everything fires up quickly, Vcarve runs very slow with redrawing any files of even a small size. I can scroll the mouse wheel and it will take about 3-4 seconds to slowly and painfully zoom. Node editing almost impossible.
Working with a file of 1.4kb will basically strangle the program to death.

I have searched the forum and read what post I could I find, but nothing I found seems to help.

Any advice to ease my pain will be greatly appreciated :)

Cheers,

I noticed nVidia has a new driver out today.

Are you using a standard wired mouse? wireless? trackball, tablet? other?

Check the following settings:
Toolpaths/Preview Simulation Quality

Edit/Options (how do your settings compare to these?)

Vectric programs aren't that GPU intensive, it's the CPU that is more important. Should be no problem at all running with the spec of that computer so I'd suspect something else is going on. Always worth bringing up Task Manager to see if anything is hogging CPU.

The only time I've seen VCarve really slow down is if there a lot of complex toolpaths all ticked to show the 2D preview.

If it were my system I'd do a remove and reinstall of Vcarve.

If the issue comes up again I'd use task manager to see if VCarve or some other process is consuming system resources.

Thanks for that,

I ran task manager on my second screen while working with a large file to really see how it would cope (64kb)
CPU peaked at 35%, GPU at 14% running the 2d preview or 26% and 7% trying to zoom with mouse wheel.
This is a typical file, mainly single vector with toolpath duplicated one climb and one conventional direction.
The sheet size is 2.0m x 1.0m with a jigsaw puzzle pattern over it. Cant share due to clients design.

No other processes using any significant resources.

Cheers,

I'd suggest getting in touch with Vectric support directly (support@vectric.com). This is primarily a user to user forum and in all the years I've been on here I don't recall anyone having an issue like that with a decent spec computer. Hopefully support will have some more ideas and you'll be able to share the file with them without it ending up on a public forum.

When you look at the drawing in node editing my guess is that you will see a huge number of nodes. Converting to Bezier curves will help. Although you will have to be careful about the conversion not distorting the layout

How about:
  • create a new file 12 inch by 12 inch by 1/2 inch
  • draw a 10 inch square
  • centre it
  • zoom in and out
Any speed issues with that?

Hi adze_cnc,

I did as suggested, no issues at all, zoom was as expected.

cheers.

Could you attach a VCarve file that shows the slow response you're having?

Hi Adrian,

I would love to but the files we struggle with are property of the boat builder we work with.

Ill see if I can create a file my self that I can post.

Cheers.

Not sure that creating your own file will have the same issues as the one from your client.

Question - are they sending you just vectors that you then import into VCarve? If so, have you run the Vector Validator and also checked for duplicate (hidden) vectors on top of each other?

I’m guessing it’s a problem with the vectors, not your software nor your computer. Let us know!

We imported client supplied DXF files.
No duplicate vectors detected.

Have never been taught about the validator, so was interesting to run it.
My results attached.

Oh boy! Definitely problems there!

Delete All the Zero Length spans, for starters! (By clicking on Fix Zero Length Spans.)

As far as the intersections - I’m afraid you are going to have to zoom in to see what’s going on and make decisions how to correct them.

Too bad someone with more experience can’t inspect them for you.

Without us seeing the file, it’s impossible to say what the best course of action is. Could be that the intersections are caused by certain vectors that need to be placed on separate layers to avoid the intersections - but, it will be up to you now to figure all that out.
