In double sided machining I tried doing a zero from same side for the first time.
Zeroed Z from top of the material on side one.
Everything went as expected.
Flipped the board over and zeroed Z from the spoil board.
Luckily I had a long depth of cut bit it cut all the way through and cut the image into the spoil board.
Completely destroying the first side, obliviously I do not understand the concept! Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
I did search the forum for similar issues and found one, but it used Mach 3 terminology and made it difficult to relate to my issue.

I haven't used that feature but. . .
When I do anything "new" that causes me to wonder if I am doing it correctly I take a quick look at the GCode before running.
In your case since you zeroed from the spoil board there should not be any Z- moves unless you want to cut into the spoil board. A simple search in something like NotePad for "Z-" would tell you right away.
I guess I finally made enough mistakes with that sort of thing to decide it is better to take a minute or so to look things over first. Quite often the stuff I do might have several hours of cutting before I make a big honking mistake like that and ruin everything and that frustrates the heck out of me.
Just ran a test of that Zero off Same Side option. Worked as advertised. In the first side program all cutting moves were Z-, in the second side cutting moves all were Z+.
Maybe you loaded the wrong file?

Hi John,
We don’t have enough info to be able to help you very well. If possible, make your file available for download so someone can look at how you’ve setup the double-sided carve.
I suspect that there may be an error in how your Limit Planes are placed in your project. It may be as simple as adjusting their position. There is an excellent video in the Support section of the Vectric website of a two-sided Dolphin Tutorial that might help explain the overcut procedure and limit planes, etc. Watch that video when you have a chance.

As I said, side 1 went as expected.
After a good nights rest the answer pops into my head.
I should always wait for a good night's sleep before asking questions on the forum.

It is important to note that you run the roughing toolpath for side 2 NOT side 1.
I went out to my CNC and checked the recently run menu and low and behold the roughing toolpath for side 2 was not run!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry for the false alarm, but I'm sure I was not the first nor the last to do this.
The sad part is I name my toolpaths with F1xxx for the first toolpath on the front, F2xxx for the second, etc.
The xxx part is the bit number.
B1xxx for the first toolpath on the back, just so things like this don't occur!!!
Again thanks to all hope this prevents someone else's operator error.
It will bring a chuckle to the CNC user groups I belong to.

Hmmm, BUT I DO label my toolpaths FRONT and BACK...hmm wonder why I do THAT?
MUCH more common mistake for me is to Z-Zero off the WRONG surface!
BET you a dollar you won't do THAT again!!

My big one is getting in a hurry and not zeroing at all when changing jobs.
So there I was, cutting 3/4 material. Tossed in some 1 1/2 thick stuff, geeee, I wonder why my collet is buried in the wood and smoking now?
How did I fix that issue? Modified the post so that now the machine always moves to 3 inches above Z0, moves to X0,Y0 and then hits an optional stop. That way I get to THINK before continuing. Has saved my bacon multiple times.

My personal favorite is misplacing the Z decimal point!!!

Cut it with the proper toolpaths to the appropriate side, zeroed correctly and it is great!

When cutting double sided projects I create a Front directory and a Back directory to keep the gcode files separated.

Yep I know full well that yelling NO NO STOP, errr or some other words, - does NOT stop the machine.
When I feel tired I know I should STOP, shut everything down and go in the house and chill out.
