Rotary with barley Twist

Post by Rcnewcomb »

Everything was cut in under 15 minutes including the rounding of the 4"x4". Most were done in about 12 minutes. The pieces are 13"-14" long and cut from Home Depot redwood 4"x4"s. The bit was a Magnate 7551 1" Barley Twist with a 0.5" cutting length.

A few earlier shots of the first cuts with the Magnate 7551 1" Barley Twist bit. Very nice finish straight off the machine.

Here is a 40 second video of rounding the 4x4 with a 1/2" end mill. ->YouTube Video

Nice job Randall. I was trying to make the round over part of the cut meet exactly half way so it formed a symmetrical dome. It can be done but the depth of cut, z-zero, and the diameter of the blank have to be set exactly. If any of the settings are off by even a couple of thousandths of an inch the round-overs will have a ridge or flat spot. Vectric tech support help me work it out.

Hmmm. Glad they helped you sort that, Steve, but I could have sworn you mentioned in your original post/thread you had already confirmed your z-zero settings for accuracy, adjusted cut depth, had accurate diameter, vector spacing, etc.

Was there anything Tech Support said other than what you (and us) had not already thought of?

Randall! All those rotary examples look fantastic! Are you bringing some to Denver?

On the roundover I use 0.5 pass depth with the 1/2” bit because I use a 20% step over. So it is mostly side cutting a narrow strip.
